Hi folks,

This is something of an embarrassing admission but I'll share in the hope that others can avoid the trap I nearly fell into today.

This morning I placed an order with a UK internet retailer for one of the items on the Canon cash back list. After ordering on the Net I decided to follow up this afternoon with a telephone call to make sure the lens was UK sourced and so qualified for the cash back. During the call I was advised the lens was out of stock, although the web-site still showed it as in stock, so I immediately cancelled the order. The web-site was updated a few minutes later.

I then decided to place a telephone order with Martins Camera Shop and asked if they could price match the other outfit. They said they couldn't because they sourced their lenses from the UK and the other outfit didn't.

I have no way of independently verifying this, hence my not naming the original retailer, though a subsequent search on Google Groups suggests that this other company has sold grey imports in the past. I suggest that if you plan on making a purchase with a view to qualifying for the cash back then be very sure you know where the item originates. Although we don't appear to suffer from "Bait & Switch" here in the UK a check on Reseller Ratings may still be worth doing.

In fairness to myself I couldn't, and still can't, find anywhere on that original site to say that the lens wouldn't have been from the UK (indeed the product description had several links to the Canon UK site) but I am mortified that I nearly fell into that trap. No cash back and no Canon UK warranty.

Bob.
