It has been more than five years since Thomas' excellent review of the predecessor of this lens. User reviews on Amazon indicate that the II is a significant improvement. I just realized, today, that this lens is suitable for full-frame cameras, not just cropped-frame, and that the II version is splash-resistant. This makes this lens a contender for an ultra-wide lens on a 1.3x-crop 1D-series camera.

I would like to learn more, please, from any members of this forum who have experience with the II version. Thanks! :)

I just stumbled upon a quite favorable review at Photozone, though it was reviewed using a 1.6x-crop Canon. My main interest is how well it does on 1.3x-crop and full-frame cameras. My Canon EF-S 10-22mm is doing a very good job for me on a 7D, though the Sigma's splash-resistance would make it potentially useful on a 7D, too, as Canon EF-S lenses are not spec'ed as having any weather-resistance.

Yeah, RexGig: I have it on my long list.
Unfortunately so far it didn't make it to my short-list for a review yet...
Photozone has also tested it on a Canon 5D here.
The charts don't look too bad, but they correctly show that results on flat targets are much worse because of field-curvature. So shooting in the distance (like landscape) is not the forte of this lens at the short end.

Thanks, Thomas. I had the opportunity to try this lens at a large local camera store's demonstration days. The Sigma representative had a Canon 60D for customers to use, which, of course, would not let this full-frame ultra-wide lens show its full potential. I had hoped to return with 1D Mark II N and 5D cameras, but could not find the time.

I learned from another blog that this lens, advertised a having some level of moisture resistance, has no gasket at the mount, which, if accurate, would make this lens less desirable, as I had hoped to use it on weather-sealed cameras. Now, the new Canon EF 16-35/4L has become the leading UWA zoom contender for my Canon cameras, while the Nikkor 14-24/2.8G remains a potential choice for my Nikons.
