I have pre-ordered this lens, expected to be released approximately January 17th, 2014. I am surprised there's been no mention of it so far in this forum. I will be happy to put up a review and samples as soon as I get my hands on it. I will be replacing my venerable Tamron 200-500mm lens, which has served me well for 5 years - the new lens will add 50mm on the wide end, 100mm on the long end, USD motor instead of screw drive, focus limiter switch and AF/MF switch, new coatings, and moisture resistant construction. The early reviews have been very positive, and the samples and tests seem to bear out a pretty sharp lens even wide open at 600mm, and quite good stopped down a bit. The release price in the U.S. is a very reasonable $1,069 - hard to imagine autofocused 600mm F6.3 for that price! Mine's in Sony/Minolta mount, so no VC since it's in the camera body - Canon and Nikon versions will also have VC (stabilization). Hopefully the lens will be released on the scheduled date and not be pushed back - we'll see!

I too will be interested Justin. Potentially a decent lens for the money.

When you do get around to reviewing it, please can you take a few shots of birds in less than ideal light. (just so we in the UK can get an idea & feel for how it will cope over here. Thanks)

I have the Tamron 150-600 but having issues on my Canon 1Dx. It only focuses in Av C1 mode. In all other modes it will only focus from a far subject to a closer one. Point the lens back out farther and nothing happens. Lens just sits their and doesn't try.

There seem to have been quite a few such observations from Canon shooters. Unknown at this point if it's a firmware glitch, specific only to the Canon mount version of the lens, or something they need to go back and fix for all. Unfortunately for all the other mount users (Nikon, Sony), release dates are pushed way back - approximately April 2014 at the earliest for Nikon mount, and Sony mount some time after that. For now, even Canon versions of the lens seem to have been a 'first batch' that quickly sold out, and even the Canon versions are now on backorder. Maybe word of the continuous focusing glitch some Canon shooters have experienced has them working on a fix.

Yesterday I updated the firmware for my Canon 1DX. That appears to have solved 98% of that issue.

Hello Alaskaphotopilot, and welcome to the friendly Camera Labs forum!
To enjoy your stay here please have a look at the house-rules!
----
interesting to hear about your probs with focus. I also find time-and-again problems with third-party lenses on my Nikon bodies.
But now that your problems were solved I'd be very interested to hear your take on image quality and the efficiency of stabilization.

So Far I've played with it one afternoon trying to shoot dog teams running by in the snow.
The image quality appears very good. Stabilizer seems on par. However it still has issues trying to grab focus when the focus point is too far away from the present point. I have to keep one finger on the focus and bring it close, then the autofocus will take over from there. Not ideal.

Gentlemen, thanks for the comments on this lens. I can see the potential of eventually acquiring one of these, in Nikon mount, for my wife, who favors Tamron lenses. Hopefully, the "bugs" can be eliminated successfully.

The shots here are the best I’ve seen from the Tamron 150 – 600mm on a Canon. Although most are static subjects I am trying to find action shots at 600mm. What do you think?

Cheers
