What lens are you using on your Nex for birding? Some incredible close ups!

Thank you. I use the eMount SEL 55-210mm OSS lens, along with an old Sony DH1758 1.7x teleextender that screws onto the end of the lens filter threads...it gives a decent 357mm reach, plus the crop factor of course, and since these types of converters are afocal in design, they're not light-lossy, so the lens remains F3.5-6.3, and able to autofocus and stabilize as normal.

Ah alright. Am looking into what kind of lens I could buy in the distant future to get even farther (got a 100-400 on a 7D now), but the only thing that seems to be an option then is the 500/4 L IS USM (first generation). Very expensive, but not even near as expensive as the second one new. Will be years before I will go try to buy one I guess.

I'm pretty much in the same boat with my DSLR. I commonly use a 300mm F4 with matched 1.4x TC, and have a 200-500mm Tamron that gives pretty good reach. But I'm still hankering for a dedicated 500mm prime that can take a matched TC, or even an old 600mm F4 if I can dig one up, but they're pricey! I've been close to biting on a 400mm F4.5 that can use my matched 1.4x TC, which would get me 560mm with pretty solid quality and should still AF.

But on the NEX, the combo I have now is about as long as I can get and still be light and convenient (the NEX so-equipped is 2.7Lbs and 11 inches long - hard to beat for that focal range on an APS-C sensor!). The DSLR I don't mind going much longer and heavier.

Another great set Zack, natural colours and sharp. The blue heron with fish is an amazing one to capture especially the two eyes meeting, nature in the raw.

Cheers

We are currently staying in a caravan park, a pair of Masked Lapwings or Plovers were defending their nest. They get quiet aggressive and those spurs look wicked. Taken with 6D and 24-70 tamron at 2.8 in marginal light.

yes plenty of attitude, they are very protective of their nest. They need to be, they lay their eggs right in the middle of a grassy area.

That one certainly captures the beautiful colours of the lorikeet against the ochre rock.

Cheers
