not really a duck, juvenile dabchick or Australasian Grebe. Parents have flown off leaving this one to fend for itself. Taken on my parent`s dam.

I have just been enlighted, its an adult bird that has recently moulted to its non breeding plumage

A few more ducks from down in Florida, the past few months...first, those taken with my DSLR (Sony A580 + Minolta 300mm F4 APO G + APO II 1.4x TC):

Here's a hybrid mottled duck - not sure what it's mixed with but it's not a normal patterned body for a mottled:

And again, a few more shots taken with my mirrorless camera (NEX-5N, 55-210mm lens + 1.7x teleextender):

I thought: let's add some pictures to the duck thread. Here they are. Are geese allowed too? Then I have some more to add soon :).

Both made with my 7D + EF 100-400/4.5-5.6 L IS USM.

More pictures coming soon, and will be adding some to the raptor and other feathery animals threads too.

That is a LOT of black-bellied whistlers! We get them in smaller numbers up here in Florida...but Mexico has many many more than we do!

Here are some more ducks from my area...including some of those black-bellied whistling ducks:

Not quite. I photograhed these ducks on San Antonio, Texas. We don't seem to get anything here in Mexico City other than pigeons and some little brown birds that are easily scared, and with an 18-55mm, I can't quite get them. There are of course some natural reserves and stuff, but no ducks near me unfortunately :(

Anyways, most duck shots I have are from that place in San Antonio, it's a small pond surrounded by trees that is adjacent to a house I have there, and ducks really seem to like going there. Though I have no idea where they come from, some years ago, before there were more buildings nearby, we used to get even deer in there and I used to spend a lot of time watching them come and go, they seemed to love coming back to that pond though.

Honestly, I don't know if they are native in there or if they are brought from somewhere else and they just like going there, but they live on their own, really no one is taking care of them for all I know.

The black bellied whistlers are native to Mexico and some of the Caribbean - I think Mexico City is too central and too high elevation for them - but I've been to Yucatan and they have thousands of them there, as well as down into Belize. I've seen them in Veracruz, Merida, Cancun, Costa Maya, and as far south as Costa Rica. They do commonly reach to Florida, mostly in the south, and Texas, along the south central area and to the east coast. San Antonio is within their range. I think they get into a few other states along the gulf coast, but that's about the limit of their range.

awesome as always zack. The spotted skunk encounter you mentioned in the other post must have been really cool and even a blurry image is better than no image at all :D

After reading this forum I came the shocking realisation that I have not taken a pic of a Saskatchewan duck yet this year.... I think I need to change that soon.
