I was about to pass the last one, but the more I looked at it, the more I liked how out of focus the bee was compared to the flower. Thought it gives it a cool look.

Thank you AdamP. If you want to have the whole Bee (and plant) in focus you have to stop right down. This means you then need to use a flash - I use a ring flash on the front of the macro lens. Happy Bee hunting :D

Thanks for the tip Greg...I know I'm kinda limited right now since I don't have a flash or tripod. Which flash do you use, or would you recommend for a beginner? Also, what range of f values do you usually shoot with in your pictures?

AdamP, yes I like your last shot very much, esp. the "dof-perspective" so to speak.

I use the Canon MR-14EX ring flash and usually work at f#22 with the flash on +3.

Bee 1 13/06/2013 by cybermystic, on Flickr

I meant to stick this post on the end of this thread instead of creating a "stand alone" - been so long since I posted a Bee pic I forgot how to do it

We're coming up to mid-June and the Bees simply haven't been about
Their numbers have dropped enormously over the last couple of years.
Last year was almost non-stop rain.
This year we have had a late Spring and the temperatures still aren't anything to write home about.
Not surprisingly the wildlife is confused and suffering.
Greg

Yeah, this is a very depressing, wet, dark 1st half in most of Europe, I think. Everything is late in nature.
But surely the bees will be around, now that most flowers have recovered. Won't they?

It seems not so in the U.K. :( :(
The Government is now looking at so-called Bee safe pesticides which appear to have been anything but.

Thank you Pierovera. If you notice, every year they get a little better as we go through the year, starting off mediocre and ending up reasonably sharp. For some reason I seem to have to re-learn the technique every time it comes to Bee season.
