 Post subject: XT vs. D40

Simply put, which do you think is the better buy? I'm looking for the lower end entry models and saw that the XT review said it was best buy in that it excelled in each field, however i saw this for the D40 as well. I also wanted to know if perhaps there is another rival in this tier that you might recommend. I really valued your review of the three 10 megapixel DSLRs, and i guess what I'm looking for is a similar review but with the 6-8 megapixel DSLRs.

Hi Chris, great question!

I'd say it all boils down to how much of a DSLR beginner you are. The D40 is better for complete beginners, but the 350D / XT offers quicker access to settings for those who like adjusting stuff like ISO and white balance.

The Canon obviously has higher resolution, but it doesn't make that big a difference in real life. The Nikon has a much bigger screen and better metering, both of which are well worth having.

The other things to consider are how they both feel in your hands, and which lenses you might upgrade to in the future, as one brand could end up being better than the other.

Ultimately both are still great cameras and recommended though, so whichever you end up with will be great!

Thanks, that's really what i think i needed to hear, It has been quite a while since I took a class or used an SLR so I think the D40 would be perfect for now.

Yeah, go for the cam that is better in automatic mode.
All the fiddling with manual controls doesnot really make the pics better!
