I got the 50mm f/1.4.

Since I figured that I was going to use this particular lens a lot because of its low light performance (my other 2 lenses were the kit 18-55 and 55-250), I figured that I should opt for the better built and faster focusing lens. And I am glad to say, that I am very pleased with it!

Of course it also loses a little when compared to the 1.8, the 1.4 actually has a wee bit more barrel distortion when compared to the 1.8. I also read that the focusing speed of the lens (50mm 1.4) is actually slower than that of the true USM lenses, as this particular one uses a micro-USM instead...

Come to think of it, this lens is OLD! When is Canon going to come out with a new design for their 50 1.4? Haha... I don't expect them to do so cause it seems that they are satisfied with the sales of this lens.

Canon is releasing a 50mm F1.4 IS USM next spring. Price tag is estimated to be 799 usd. Your lens was released in 1993, quite outdated but still stellar.

Went for the f1.4 mostly as a result of reding the reviews here and some opinions on B & H and DigialRev etc.

I've had it a couple of weeks and love it. When i work out how to post photos i'll put a couple up.

I looked at the f1.2 but the extra $ were an issue and the opinions i was getting seemed to say the 1.4 represented the best value/performance proposition. By not buying the 1.2 and saving some $ it meant i could get the 100-400 EF L for the Avalon Airshow in a couple of weeks.

Hi everyone, I've posted some optical results for the 50mm f1.2 and f1.8 lenses which you may find interesting.

See my Canon 50mm f1.8 review and Canon 50mm f1.2 review

A report on the 50mm f1.4 coming soon!

Well after reading your review Gordon, I was quite disappointed with the f/1.2's quality. For an "L" lens at that price point, I think you could expect quite nicer performance, but it lacked my expectations. I believe the f/1.4 really is the best deal for a 50mm lens.
Though what I don't get it the fringing. Although easily fixed, I don't know why a lens that expensive would get that amount of fringing when at f/1.2 or f/1.4.

Thanks for the review Gordon :)
