perhaps the chooser of the assignment's theme could also choose the rules regarding the time constraints?

2 Threads - one as "Assignment" and one with the best shot without time limit.

I find Jiko's solution pretty good, but for me personally the assignment would be more fun. The assignment would make me go out there and get the picture I want for this assignment. The "best of portfolio" would just be a reason to dive into my older folders, which is (again for me personally) not as much fun.

Whilst I like the best in the portfolio for a given subject matter once in a while I do believe the monthly assignment drives you to go get new photos.

I would like to see the no time constraint occasionally but only say once every 4 months so 3 times a year.

I like Rob's idea of 4 times per year for a no time limit comp. (Feb/May/August/Nov?)
I guess it could be done at the end of each season `Your best image of Spring-Summer-Autumn-Winter`, wherever we are in the World.

I purposely picked a topic that gets you all into the great outdoors and left the subject choice very open. Anyone could step into their backyard or park and get a shot, irrespective of season or location. Flowers, bugs, plants, trees, birds, insects, animals, macro etc.

Didn`t expect most of you to dive into the deep wild wilderness of your hard drives and its only early in the month. :P

Its spring or autumn, depending on where you live, its a great time of year for outdoor photography.

Oh and please, minimal processing.

Thanks Mike, Max, I guess it depends on some luck for an assignment, I go to many new places and sometimes there is what I think would be a good shot but conditions are not to good for it. I went to Coffs Harbour last week having not been there for years, although great new scenery the weather was unusually heavy overcast and no photo shoot.

Cheers

Hi folks,

Just a quick reminder that although we've relaxed the time constraint this month the size restraint (1024 pixels or less) still applies.

Bob.

Being dumb. How can you check the pixel count?

Since you're posting pictures hosted on Google's servers, it's very easy. In the link that you get from right clicking the image on Google, look for the size information, which might be something like "w1203-h802-no". Select that, without any "/", and replace it with s1024. That will set the maximum dimension, whether that's vertical or horizontal, to 1024 pixels. I've already edited your post, but this shows you what I changed:

I'm a bit ambivalent about this current relaxation of the rules as regards timings ... while I'm very pleased to be able at last to have been permitted to put forward one of my most satisfying shots, I do feel however that the monthly time-limited challenge still has much to recommend it as a means of concentrating the mind and forcing us out of laziness / complacency. BUT ... what a dire and miserable affair 'Assignment' had become in recent times and with the time limitation relaxed how enormously this has helped revive it, for this month at least. Maybe we could 'relax' on a 4-monthly cycle. There are so many great shots that get taken that never see the light of day because they miss the time-window ... it's good to see them being screened at last.

There are a lot of great shots in the assignment this month.

And we have 20 entries this month with 2 days to go.

Personally I hope that we don't have an open competition every month. A few times a year, like 4 or so would be good. Or we get a second thread where people can showcase "best in portfolio" photos on the theme set. The best in portfolio shots can then form an inspiration for new photographers to show them what is possible and give people inspiration. I'm worried that if we always have an open competition some young photographers might be put off thinking they can't compete with the amazing photos.

If we can limit the best of portfolio competitions to 4 a month and for the other months have an extra thread so experienced photographers can showcase their photos too.
