Good review Gordon. I enjoyed reading it and seeing the photos.

Thanks for the review, Gordon!

I handled a D7100 yesterday, and was gratified to find that the grip area, for the right hand, feels much better in the hand than the D7000, at least for me. Perhaps Nikon listened to those who lamented the ergonomic changes of the D7000-era DSLRs, and has made the D7100 feel more like the D300/D700 generation.

With a bigger grip, better autofocus, weather sealing that is supposed to be on par with the D800 etc etc... I wonder, what could we possibly want from a D300s successor? The only thing I could think of is a faster burst rate and larger buffer along with a PC-sync port for studio photography and maybe a full magnesium body. But would those warrant the same price premium the D300 had over the D90? I'm so curious about the future of DX.

Also with the D7100 being weather sealed and all the other bells and whistles, I find it curios that there isn't a premium grade weather sealed DX lens on the market. Apart from the 17-55 2.8 which was introduced in 2003 when there was no FX dslr. And it still costs an arm and a leg. Even used. I'd be very very happy if a new 16-85 VR f4 with weather sealing and faster af were announced. Basically a 24-120 f4 for dx and I think that even at the same price point it would be very interesting for a lot of people.
Sorry for all the rambling... sometimes I just cant stop myself :/

Woor, I completely agree, I wish Nikon would produce a weathersealed high-end DX lens, and likewise for Canon with EF-S...

Another 2 weeks on & more pics to Nikon online help, inc setting combo up on solid surface & shooting in `P` mode`???

Anyway, I met up with a guy at w/end who is happy with his new camera & saw some of his bird shots on his monitor, stunning sharp images. You could even see the barbs on feather detail, on blue tits, taken from 4-5 mts away.

Anyway, he tried my camera with his lens & couldn't get the same detail. Also mine seems noisier/grainier, especially in the shadows.

I rang the supplier, who said it best to take it into them & they've sent it to off to Nikon service centre today to have it checked out.

I'd rather be without it for a few weeks, than struggle for evermore. Hopefully it'll be sorted soon, so in the meantime i'll have to use my trusty D700, although not ideal for cropping pics of little birds.

I'll update when I get it back.

Best of luck with it Carlos. I hope we get to see more photos once you got the camera back and that it all is working as it should.

Update.

Got my camera back yesterday. (just over 2 weeks, which isn't too bad really)
It's been to Nikon service centre in Surrey.
No parts replaced. Checked AF, metering, shutter etc etc.
Cleaned sensor, optics, mirror & viewfinder. (obviously not done in a clean-room environment, as there is now a fibre in the VF  )
They've taken 30+ shots.

I took a few pics yesterday, but weather is appalling so not had chance to try for any birds, but it didn't seem any better.

This eve I took a series of pics of a bank-note @ approx 7mts distance with my 300mm F2.8 lens + 1.7TC (my birding combo)
Taken on a solid surface, Aperture priority, mirror delay, VR off.
Used AF-C with dynamic 9 points, AF-s with single point, & even a couple in Auto AF-S single point.

Minus- AF fine-tune was far the worst, so + needed.

These are 3 severe crops;

No AF fine-tune

+20 AF fine-tune

Manual focus in live-view

I'll be ringing the dealer first thing in the morning!

Can you get a replacement as the one you got does not do what the maker has stated.

Cheers

Spoken with the shop again this morn & they offered to either send back to nikon again (no chance!) full refund, or wait to get another body in for exchange, but could be another week or more, as they're still waiting for stock. They couldn't be more helpful really.

In the end (after agreement with my moneyboss) i'm getting a D800E instead 8)

Cheers guys.
