...your new G1 X, please feel free to ask; I've owned its predecessor, the Canon PowerShot G12, since it was release. Both cameras are as close to a DSLR camera without having interchangeable lenses.
Please check out these features:
Handheld Night Scene: allows you to take night shots w/o a tripod by taking and merging several photos.
Stitch Assist: allows panoramic photos from a number of shots.
HDR: allows for shots with bright and dark areas, combining several quick consecutive shots into one.
Pardon me for butting in, but Sarah just bought a Panasonic GX1, not a Canon G1 X. I only mention this to avoid confusion because the GX1 is an interchangeable lens camera, but it does not have a Panorama or HDR mode.

Oops, apologies! My mistake, I should have been clearer. Yes, as Mark says it's the Panasonic GX1 that I've just purchased. Thank you all for the welcomes.
I attempted to take some photos of the birds in our garden this morning as we have a late start at work due to snow! All I can say is,
lots of practice needed. The snow keeps coming out a bluish or grey colour. I resisted the temptation to just select the auto function though. If at first you don't succeed....
