Well, you are a bit wrong (a bit!) about Nikon having more bells and whistles. Take for example the D7000.
The 7000 has some nice, pro-esque features over the 60D, for instance: 100% v/f, LCD grid lines in the v/f, magnesium alloy body, more AF points, dual memorycard slots, better high ISO performance, much better metering and I miss another very important one, Ive just forgotten it. Any Nikon fanboy could help me with that one I guess.
It is just not true that Canon's photos are better, to your eyes they may look better, but to us they do not. Nikon's photos are much more neutral looking, without being overcoocked like some Canon DSLRs do.

To be fair, I love Minolta, but yeah, since Sony got them (KM) I dont like Minolta as Sonys that much anymore. They make great cameras, but not for me. Well, I like Nikon because of that. They focus on photography instead of anything else. I think the D800(E) is also better than the 5D III, only Canon's 1100D is better than Nikon's D3100. But compare the 6D against the D600, it's clear that for a photographer the D600 is much better featured than the 6D.

As I said, I own both 350D and 50D. Both are excellent cameras, really. Ive chosen Canon because Canon has the 70-200 L lenses at a sharp price point and many more accessoires for astrophotography than other brands.

But in the end I have my divine 50D, and even though it's from 2008, it's still a great camera. It will last the coming 10 years, and after that, good question. Depends on my lens catalogue then, I guess it'll be a 1Dx or 5D II. One has a camera to take photographs, not to show people of what one has.

In my opinion, and this is coming from a somewhat Canon fanboy, Canon is actually the one with all the bells and whistles. One thing I do like a lot more from a Canon rather than a Nikon, is that the video is quite a lot better than in any Nikon, and with the 650D's new AF system, they have made a huge improvement. Of course it doesn't match the Sony SLTs, but still, pretty good. Also, comparing DSLRs, this would be what I think:
Canon 1100D > Nikon D3100
Canon 650D > Nikon D5100 (but we're still waiting for the D5200, so I think we should wait)
Canon 60D < Nikon D7000 (But for video, the Canon would win IMO)
Canon 6D <<< Nikon D600 (Canon messed up with the 6D in my opinion)
Canon 5D MK III ≈ Nikon D800 (In my opinion, up to this point, it depends a lot in what you're shooting and what you need)
Canon 1DX > Nikon D4 (Still kind of like the above, but personally I think the 1DX is better)

This is a general opinion, but it ALWAYS depends on what you need, what you're willing to spend and what you're most comfortable with.
Also, what Ruben123 said about Canon images being overcooked, I personally like to mess with the settings so it produces a natural, more unprocessed shot so I can post-process it myself. I prefer the Nikon look actually.

You know the 650D is below the 5D right? A less camera will not give you less good pictures. That is what many think, and therefore they upgrade to every new camera that comes on the market. Professional photographers back in 2004 loved the Canon G5's quality, I still do (even that much that I've bought two of them). Photos taken by a G5 are not bad or worse than other photos, at least, if you know how to use a camera.
And that's the point I think. You never have had a camera, so why would you step in the pro-catagory? It's much smarter to try a G15 (or G12) first, to see if you actually can make excellent/good photographs. If you cannot, easy, be happy that you did not buy a 5D.
The Canon 50D is a baby 5D II they say, you could also look at a used 50D (or 40D) (which much be quite cheap these days). The differences in IQ between the 50D and 7D were very small, only better visible at ISO 6400 and 12800. And since the 650D has a sort of same sensor as the 7D the IQ would be quite similar. Oh, and the 50D is a semi-pro body, if you think you need that!

Just buy a camera and shoot. Every day there will be a better camera. A perfect moment for a perfect photograph will not however.

I guess it has not too much to do with the Dutch Armand van Helden And you refer to the 5D III thread I think? Well, it is understandable... a bit. When I bought my Panasonic FZ28, it was the best camera around. That was of course because I loved it so much that I did not want (to believe) there was anything better. Same here!
