I am new to the world of SLR cameras and have decided on eother the Nikon D5100 or the Canon Rebel T3i. For now I am needing the camera to take action pictures of elk and deer.
Does anyone recommend one camera over the other?

First, it's generally noted that, when choosing an interchangeable lens system, it's usually more about the lens(es) than the camera body. So make sure that the system you pick can accommodate the len(es) you need. And don't forget to budget for these len(es), as well. e.g. for elk/deer I would guess you'd want a telephoto, and if they are in a forest (shade), you may want to have something that's also fast-bright(-ish). Maybe something like a 70-200mm f4.0 which will probably add several hundred dollars to your total cost.

Second, it's generally recommended that you go to a store and handle the cameras, as one camera may feel better to you than the other.

Third, this thread would probably be more appropriate in the "Buying a new camera but undecided on brand?" section. Mods?

But ultimately for wildlife, you'll want a nice long lens and one that's as bright as you can afford, so as Maestro suggests, it's driven by which lenses you can afford. Check out the lens guides under the lens reviews tab above...

For a bright telephoto I can recommend the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 HSM, which fits both D5100 and T3i. For a less bright one I really recommend the Canon 70-200 f/4L, which is tack sharp, even wide open. This one can only fit on Canon bodies though!
Regarding the bodies, are there no other bodies you can buy, and is used an option?

I too recently was in a toss up with these until my recent purchase. So at the risk of adding to the difficulty of your choice have you considered the newer D3200 Body? Just thought I'd throw it out there, its the direction I went. Also someone else made the comment about going to the store and actually holding one in person, I definitely recommend give that a try as well. The Nikon's fit my hand well. Lastly you may want to take into consideration your primary intended use i.e. photography or video. At the end of the day I don't think you will go wrong with either of these to be honest. I think you've misunderstood Ruben123's post. The lens is compatible with both Canon and Nikon bodies but the one that is compatible with Nikon has a different SKU number from the one compatible with Canon as they both have different lens mounts.
