A friend of mine flew there to photograph it... talked to him this evening and he had a blast... unfortunately for those who live there however it was even worse than a lot thought it would be which means that a lot of what they tried to do before to prevent the worst ended up being mostly useless as the water just overwhelmed the defences.

what really scares me about this whole thing is that this wasnt even really a hurricane so to speek when it hit land.. yes it was a big storm... the biggest ever to hit the states from what I understand but by the sounds of it the world as a whole can expect more of these storms more frequently. New York's infrastructure is old and getting older by the day.. imagine if this would have been even just a cat 3 hurricane... hate to see what would have happened then... and keep in mind a cat 3 or bigger hurricane hits the northeastern coast of the US about every 100 years and its been around that since the last one..

hopefully this is a wakeup call and they start looking at seawalls and such in strategic places cause if an actual cat 3 hurricane were to hit I cant see a lot of the aging buildings in NY standing up to that type of force nevermind the subway system, electrical and other infrastructure.

I think New York City is VERY vulnerable to storms! The relative spanking from Sandy should serve as a warning to build real seawalls and floodgates. The Jersey shore cities should consider a proper concrete seawall, to reinforce rebuilt boardwalks. I can only imagine what a storm surge of 20+ feet would have done. Such storm surges are not uncommon here in the USA's South.

Actually, being a lover of nature, I think building anything on a barrier island is a bad idea, but people will do what people will do.

As a first-responder near the Texas coast, along the Gulf of Mexico, I have seen what a storm can do.

I pray for, and hope for, all those in the affected area, especially for the first-responders and their families.

Finally got power back after the storm. Life without electricity just plain sucks. The damage here is unbelievable. At least my family is safe!

Sorry to hear that Jiko.

After our recent 6 day campervan trip i took nearly 300 photos...on reviewing them my wife said... "you take great landscape shots"..... i smiled.... then she said..."but"...... i paused and waited for the criticism..."do you think you could take more photos of me and the kids..?"

i turned around and said...

"i would need to buy a new lens for that :)"

approval gained

:D

Nice recovery!

I'm currently trying to reheat myself after grabbing some shots of Andromeda, the moon and Jupiter again.

:D robbon44

Wish I could pull that off since I do mostly landscape but my wonderful beautiful wife just absolutely hates having her picture. It's ok though, I got a baby on the way and when I get back from Afghanistan I can pull it off then

I'm switching to Canon for a month while my D7000's in the shop. First reaction: lens mounting and zooming are reverse. How did I not know this?

So the wife and I are at the big el paso holiday craft show and they have everything here from christmas stuff to local people selling marry kay and junk. The local pawn shop is even here trying to buy gold. I walk around the corner and first thing I see is a 24-105L sitting on the table. My wife even knows that red ring means something to me. My first thought is the pawn shop brought some stuff but its sitting on a table of gadgets. Then it hits me, it's one of those coffee mugs

It's been over a month here, I'm more ticked off about the inability to get astrophotos than the lack of sun.
