A woodie that I came across the other day... I'm still not happy with any of my shots I have gotten of wood ducks to date but at least I'm getting a few opportunities a year now to at least try for a good shot....

I'll try to pick up the slack - our ducks are just starting to populate again, and we'll have a lot more over the next few months.

Here are my latest batch of ducks:

got these a few days after the last set I posted of the wood duck above...

Image

Image

Now if only the sun would have been at his 2 oclock position instead of 11 for these next 3 pics... I had been watching him on 2 occassions now and he had been perching on this branch when resting both times I had seen him... I managed to find a tree to hide behind at the only access point I had to this area of the pond and sure enough after about 20 minutes he slowly came back and got up on the small branch... I took these pics and was prepared to wait another 45 minutes or so til the sun got to his 1 oclock position but then it clouded over with no breaks in the clouds for as far as I could see so that was that... annoying to say the least.

Althoguh I dont think winter is officially here quite yet we got about 40 centimeters of snow on Tuesday so we are quite white up here right now... still seeing the odd duck but with the amount of flocks I have seen fly over since then Im pretty sure waterfowl pics will be few and far between now til next spring... but Im keeping my fingers crossed we will still get an indian summer within the next week or so...

Superb pics as always Wolfsong. I'm almost as impressed by the throwaway remark "we had 40cms of snow...so are quite white up here right now."

The UK would have been totally hamstrung.

Great shots! Nice duck, looks a little strange to me that it has red eyes, I've never seen anything like that

thanks guys.. wood ducks are 1 of only a handful of species of ducks that nest in trees.. as such they have specially adapted webbed feet with claws to help them perch in trees. They have several unique characteristics besides red eyes which a few other species of ducks also posess.

I love em dearly and have been trying for years to get that perfect shot of one and Im still trying... I also find them one of the most dificult birds to photograph due to the vibrant colors they have... Getting just the right sun to highlight them all is most difficult. Only other birds that have given me this much difficulty to photograph are different species of male birds of paradise.
