Occasionally I get lucky with light when I'm out on a photowalk.

I got lucky big time this morning, with 3 different guys in 3 different locations. Generally I like to process my colour shot, and then complete in black and white, but I like both versions with these. Unfortunately I had to crop the last one by 50%, as if I had moved him or got any closer I would have lost the light and moment. For once I like colour and B&W equally with these

Anyway, here are 3 sets - colour and b&w - C&C more than welcome:

I agree, both color and b&w are great! Did you use some kind of reflector for the third portrait?

Got some of the gear but really still no idea...

Thanks guys. No refector or light modifiers used - just ambient light as I found it. The floor acted as a soft reflector in #3, and in all 3 I was in quite dark alleys, with soft light on the scene from alleyway entrances around 30-50ft away

What body and lens did you use? You're getting good noise control at those ISO settings, at least from my frame of reference.

It's my favourite combo for street now. I've only recently started using it up close with people and like the results. Shot 3 above was a crop, as if I got closer I would have blocked the light and lost the moment. Even with a lowly 12 MP, cropping tight was possible, but this was about my limit. After cropping, a slight under exposure of the RAW file and subtle tonal contrast from Color Efex software and it was done

I like all three, and really enjoy being able to view both color and monochrome versions. Perhaps, later, I will select a favorite. I am not a trained art critic, but I know there is something special about all of your images posted on Cameralabs.

I got very lucky with the light here, which makes a huge difference. In low light like this, the camera tries to bring up the exposure and brighten it, exposing to the right. I knew with a check of the LCD that I had a few nice shots and no clipping. Then it was just a case of bringing the exposures down from the RAW file and adding a little bit of Tonal Contrast i pp and hey presto.

So I could have shot in manual and under exposed the shot there and then but the D700 gives good colour and acceptably low noise results up to around ISO6400 at a push so I knew I was safe letting the auto ISO ride and just concentrating on the shots.

As always Phil, superb shots from difficult conditions. Right to crop the arms from 3 and, for me, No.1 definitely looks better in B&W - but only because the hair looks a tad dodgy in colour. Perhaps you can put that down to jealousy from someone who is "follically challenged!"

Superb portraits. I like #'s 2 & 3 in B&W, they have real character, but I actually prefer #3 in colour because it shows the unatural hair colouring they use. (btw, he looks like Eric Cantona! )

I couldn't get closer (I'd have blocked the light) or asked him to move (I'd have lost the light) so I had to shoot what I could with the 3rd shot.

The hair colouring, I'm reliably informed, is henna and has a religious connotation.
