Which is the better camera for a serious amateur: sony slt a65 or nikon d3200?

Even if you're a "serious amateur" that doesn't say much. What you'll be shooting is more important.

Have you held either camera in your hands?

Forgive me for asking but are you assuming that because they're both 24MP, they're very similar cameras? Is there a specific requirement for 24MP such as a recommended pixel count for a large poster/canvas print?

I'm asking because the Nikon D3200 and Sony a65 are positioned quite differently in their respective manufacturers' product lineup.

Personally, I see the D3200 being suitable for many casual shooters and enthusiasts and the a65 being better suited to action/sports photography.
