 Post subject: Website loading problems
PostPosted: Tue Aug 28, 2012 1:08 am
Just reporting problems when loading website pages, I believe it is related with the ads on the page, by doing a network request log in Firefox using Firebug I manage to 'solve' the problem on my side by blocking all content requested to cgmlab.com using ABP for that.

The problem is presented as taking more than 1 min (up to 5 mins or more) to load a page.
On a more technical point of view, the page makes requests that block the load of the rest of the page, only after all those requests got a timeout is the rest of the page loaded. Some browsers might behave differently on this regard.

IDK if ads are requested by IP geo-location (it seems like they are as there are words like 'geo' and 'location' in ads network requests), so I'll leave my details here:
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64bits
Browser: Firefox 15.0 (beta channel) - I could test with other browsers, but if a page forces me to use another browser, I would stop visiting that page entirely.
Location: Portugal
ISP: ZON TV Cabo

Hope it helps, for the moment I'll be blocking all the ads from the website...

What kind of beta is the version of Firefox? Is it close to a general release stage or is it a beta version with known or a distinct possibility of bugs/instability?

Why not try ruling out the browser as a cause of the problem, especially with the fact that you're using a beta version of a web browser?

Thanks for letting me know. I've also been experiencing some issues with the speed of the ebay ads appearing, albeit when using a mobile phone connection.

May I ask, is your ISP mobile or fixed line?

I'd also appreciate if you could check if the problem only occurs at certain times of day - for example it seems fine for me during the day but slow at night.

I'm looking into this ASAP and thank you for your patience,

Gordon

Yeah, I asked Gordon what was going on and he told me there was some sort of update or something, but anyways I'm glad they're back :)

Yep, I updated the forum software and also tweaked the registration to try and reduce spam, but as always, just flag any you see and that makes it easier for us to find and remove...

Oh really? Well then, I hope that at least spammers can be reduced effectively, but even if what you did doesn't work, I still appreciate that you've done something to try and keep spammers from coming into the forums. Thanks Gordon!

Just a quick comment now that I remembered this thread:
Apparently whatever Gordon updated to the forums, it has kept spammers completely away, I haven't seen any since the update.

Thanks Gordon! :D

Hi pierovera, glad you noticed! I made a quick mod to the registration process which seems to be greatly reducing spam, while also allowing me to unlock gmail and yahoo registrations which were previously blocked.

We're still getting a few spammers coming through, but it;s much reduced, so finger's crossed it'll last for a bit...!

I've also made some modifications to the ebay ad code which should see it loading faster then before, so the issues originally reported in this thread should hopefully be a thing of the past.

Thank you! As a matter of fact, I had issues with the page loading due to the eBay ads, thanks for sorting it out! :D

Just tried it out and there's a really noticeable difference, loading times have been improved quite much, thanks Gordon :)
