Sometimes I have the feeling that One Shot is more precise if it's dark. AI Servo doesn't find the right focus when shooting outside at night - One Shot has less problems.

But come on - ISO 25.600!!! I just love this camera!

ISO 25,600??? have you done any PP on noise or is it just straight out of camera??? i havent tried till now with such range but , for sure will try tonite

JPG straight out of the camera with standard settings - if you are processing RAW you might get even better results.

It is easy to see why you love the MkIII- remarkable capability. I had a feeling you would would put it to good use and, that is certainly the case! Great night shot subject and exposure.

I don't have a car as the fuel prices are just silly. 1 liter costs about 1,70€ = ~2,23$ - and that's just the fuel and still no car. I could have bought a used car for that money but I just feel the camera is a better investment. It's easy to get about anywhere by bike and train here.


ISO 12.800 - my 500D's limit. On the 500D that shot would have looked terrible - here: Hardly any noise visible. 12.800 on the 5D3 looks almost slightly better than ISO 1.600 on the 500D.

In defense of the 500D though, sorta. Its sensor is quite bad, I remember when I had the 50D which has the same sensor and had to tackle more and uglier noise than the 450D.

We are lucky in Europe, we live in a "smaller society".

I'm not going to throw the 500D away now. I'm still using it as long as the light is good and if a higher reach (100-400mm => ~160-640mm) is needed. And I still need to get the battery grip for my 5D3 - it just doesn't feel "right" without one. About 1/3 of my shots are taken vertically and that feels strange without a grip. Just like it's only the half of a camera (ergonomically).

hi guys just want to ask couple of things regarding the canon 5d mark iii- 24-105 f.4 L USM

when shooting hand held what is the minimum shutter speed 1/160 of second i know that i should use the minimum shutter speed of my focal length for e.g 105 -1/25minimum or greater 200+ ?

also im not sure about different f.values for e.g my 24-105 is f.4 throughout but i can change it up 22. i went to couple of events and i was shooting in A mode, one shot spot for still portrait everything else in ai focus servo, spot and evaluative metering, white balance cloudy, shade and auto iso 50-100 and f.4 different option depending if i was in or outdoors in direct sun light or in shade or if they were some clouds.

i was checking a review out on the 24-105 lens and the person mentioned that the f8 is the optimal sharpest f. is that wright.


so let me get this wright the the smaller the f. the more light come in the lens, and the closer you are to the subject the more swallow depth of field you have if the subject his a way from the background, and if i use the same f.4 value but im further away from the subject everything's is in focus no matter where the subject is.


if i use bigger f. value less light is coming in to the lens and my my depth of field is greater meaning everything is sharper no matter if i close to the subject or further away?

so to get group shot or to get everything in focus i need bigger f. and do i have to choose af zone or all 61 points or im ok to use single spot af.

Jiko, your most excellent high-ISO cat images are increasing my yearning for a 5D Mark III!

Fuel is much less costly in the USA, but parts and maintenance, plus taxes, fees, and insurance, make ownership of motor vehicles quite expensive. Public transport is much less efficient in most of the USA, and absent in many areas, sadly. My photography has certainly caused me to delay purchasing a newer vehicle, as my basic Honda Civic is adequate for my present needs. I plan to try to purchase a 5D Mark III next year, further delaying a newer vehicle, but I doubt I will have any regrets. A personal vehicle has become a means to get to a place to shoot photos, rather than an end pursuit, in and of itself. I reckon my next vehicle will be plain and utilitarian, too. Life is good!

I shoot weddings for a living. I love how you showed that the sharper images were just an internal setting of the sharpness, etc which you can set up.

I do like the 5 D Mark II and our 50 D.

The question will be to upgrade or not? If we need another camera then a 5D MK II is also a great replacement as the prices will be much better. DXO gives me an added stop but I do like the on board chip level noise lowering idea.

I always read your review from our original Olympus E-510, which takes great photos. When I hear people bragging about their Nikon, I say: I will bring in several photos taken with different camera and you tell me which ones come from Nikon. They answer: That is impossible to tell what camera was used. It is more important to compose, light and shoot.

If I had the 5D2 I wouldn't upgrade. The image quality didn't get so much better and the other features might be nice but - in my opinion - not worth the money. I'd rather wait until the 5D2 dies or the 5D3 is getting quite a bit more affordable.

I hear you. I am some what blown away by how well we can reduce noise, hence the need for iso 12800. I recently took a photo at the reception and the flash didn't fire. It was quite dark. I increased the exposure and noise was present on the wall. I dragged the noise sliders over to about 80% in DXO and no noise. You always lose some detail but an acceptable 5x7 for sure.

A lot of the Mk III features I wouldn't use, but it is always nice to have new camera. I priced the Mark II at half and that is very attractive.
