Hi everyone, this is the official thread for the Canon EOS 6D, the new 'affordable' full-frame DSLR with built-in Wifi and GPS!

I already started my next FF fund, if it goes better than I expect, I will get 5d3, if not D600.

Either 6d's price should be much less or specs should be closer to D600 in order to be successful, imho.

You can bet that, I don't think sales will be good so a lower price point will be a must.

Congratulations on the child, and do be careful in Afghanistan! My wife is a photographer, and yes, if your wife catches the fever for photography, you will be needing another DSLR, to preserve the peace.

As for the 6D, itself, from I have read about it, compared to be 5D Mark III, I am going to keep my eyes on the prize: 5D Mark III. (...or perhaps, 1DX.) If I am going to fund two-thirds of the price of a 5D Mark III, I might as well do what it takes to fund the remaining third, rather than settle for the lesser camera. I really want two memory card slots, and I wonder whether the 6D is weather-sealed as well as the 5D3 and 7D. (Indeed, weather-sealing is one of the reasons I am considering a 1DX, if I can fund it, as it is better-sealed than any other Canon DSLR.) I have shot evidentiary photos with my 7D cameras in the rain, and would rather not pay $2000+ for a DSLR with lesser sealing.

Personally I don't think it will be weather sealed, because the way the 6D is looking until now, I don't think the weather sealing was taken into consideration, but you never know

Today I've been to the photokina and I could get my fingers on the 6D - my 5D3 right next to it.
The 6D feeld pretty solid and looks and felt bigger and better in my hands than the Nikon D600 (although I couldn't put those directly next to each other). Actually the viewfinder is quite good; as I said it feels solid (not much worse than the 5D3), has a slightly smaller grip bug it's still OK. At least in that hall the AF worked pretty well - even the non-cross-type AF points are definitely not "just there" but "usable".

I like it. I had no time to put my card in so I can't show any pictures in comparison to the 5D3. But yeah... after all that reading and viewing pictures I have to say it's definitely a very nice camera. Not too many great specs but just a solid camera.

For me the down side of the 5D2 over the 7D would be the autofocus. This is reputed as being poor in the 5D2 when it is good in the 7D. If the 6D had an autofocus as good as the 7D and the rest of the camera was up to 7D standards then, for me, it would be a good full frame alternative.

The price however needs to fall.

For ball park comparison, the 5D2 is around £1500, with the 6D pre-orders listing at £1800. I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to see it moving closer to where the 5D2 is as the last ones get shifted.

first off: I love that finally we are seeing more affordable FF cameras. I think that 2099 EUR is reasonable for the first generation of these... BUT what I dislike about the 6D:
* 97% Viewfinder - WHY? not at that price
* AF system... Why not include an AF system like in the 7D? that would have been way better
* Direct internet connection to upload photos on Facebook? 2099 EUR to upload a 5MP picture on Facebook? well my phone was much cheaper Why not do it over the phone sync?
* (Canon Sensors in general): low dynamic range compared to competition (Sony, Nikon, Pentax)

what I like:
* very good low light performance, if it is anything close to the 5DIII
* 2/3 of the MSRP price of the 5DIII

The FPS is neutral as I only used my 5.7 fps once in a Zoo (I have a 60D) but 6 would have been nice. I usually only take one picture and do not fire away.

I agree with many of you: if the price is 2099 EUR than the feature set needs to be higher, and if the feature set remains what it is now (the way more likely option), I could justify the price at 1500-1700 EUR as it is a very solid low light performer (apparently).

Rumors have it though, that Canon is announcing a 70D/7DII mix in early 2013 with better dynamic range and 2 stops better low light performance than the current 7D... I will definitely wait until then to decide I have too many cropped lenses to just jump on FF right now...

It seems to me that many people here are carping on about what is "bad" about the new 6D, comparing it to the 5D3 and saying it should have better this or that from the 7D or the 5D3. This misses the point entirely- this is a MUCH cheaper camera.

I have a 7D and a 40D as a backup and was one of the very many who waited ages for the 5D3 to come out, only to be hugely disappointed by the high price and low resolution compared to the Nikon D800. I wanted to replace my 40D with a full-frame body for better portrait and landscape shooting and although I could afford the 5D3 I could not justify it in terms of price/performance. If I didn't already have so much good Canon glass I would have got the D800 in a heartbeat. The issues with 5D3 light leakage only confirmed my aversion to that body.

In the 6D we have a semi-pro body with some of the pro features missing. No, it doesn't have a full magnesium alloy body and is therefore less robust than a pro model. No, it doesn't have the weather sealing of a pro model. No, it doesn't have the AF system of a pro model. There is no point complaining that these features should be present- if they were it would BE a pro model, in fact it would BE a 5D3 and would cost that much more. If you want pro features you have to pay pro prices. It is not rocket science.

On the plus side, it is lighter in weight and smaller than a pro model, meaning that it is easier to pack and carry around all day. It has GPS tagging built in (which is so much more convenient than messing around pairing it with a phone) which can even track your journey. This is fantastic for travel photography and even holiday snapshots. It also has WiFi built in, which may be of limited benefit while "out and about" but in a portrait studio environment it means instant backup and transfer to a workstation without tethering.

The back screen is a bit smaller than the 5D3 and doesn't swing out as on some of the "consumer" bodies, but attempting to assess shots of this resolution on a screen on the back of the camera is pointless anyway in my opinion. I always wait till I get the shots onto my workstation. Also, a flip out screen it a bit of a gimmick as far as I am concerned- a toy for the people who spend their holidays walking round looking at the world on the screen of a camcorder or pointing the camera at themselves at drunken parties. Such a screen does have some valid uses, but I would trade that gimmick for a better price point. Also, flip-out screens always seem very vulnerable to me.

The main point is that the 6D has a full-frame sensor, and since it has a slightly lower resolution than the 5D3 the sensor photosites are actually slightly BIGGER, meaning that it is likely to have BETTER low light performance than the 5D3.

The price is still too high at the moment, but as we are already seeing with the 5D3, the battle with Nikon is forcing the street prices down fairly quickly after launch. Once the initial rush (Christmas?) and preorders have been satisfied Canon will need to drop the price in order to maintain regular sales. Spring next year may see some juicy deals on offer.

Stick a battery grip on this to feed the GPS and WiFi and this could be a superb camera for holiday/travel photography or all-day studio work. The only drawback it that my EF-S glass won't fit, but this was always going to be the case with a FF body and I have plenty of good EF glass anyway.

Now I just need my local dealers to get some in so that I can get my sticky fingers on one.
