As mirrorless is starting to take market share and quality is rivaling higher end DSLRs, the sensor size is increasing. Look to Sony's new mirrorless full frame for evidence.

It makes sense for Nikon and Canon to follow suit and put Full Frame into smaller bodies. Slap a 35mm f2 on the D600 or 6D and you have a price match compared to the Sony.

renjith, how "bad" did people find the AF of the 5D2? Yes, a lot of people wished for more, but at the end of the day it was still capable of performing in a lot of roles. And whoever the mysterious "pro" is, I'm sure they would pick a suitable camera for the job. For static subjects, the AF is less important. If you're covering a 100m sprint, chances are you'd have 1D level bodies by the bucket load anyway. No one said the 6D was going to take over everything. It has its place.

I have to admit, I still really hoped the 6D would have a 7D style 19 point all cross point module, even if I'm not likely to replace my 5D2 any time soon.

Overall, the 6D is still a general improvement over the 5D2, and at a UK pre-order price around £1800, it is only a bit more than the 5D2 at around £1500, and far lower than the 5D3 at around £2600. The 5D2 wont hang around forever, and after the initial pre-order price the 6D should drop towards where the 5D2 is now in the not too distant future.

I think its a good move by canon and its only going to get cheaper. Wonder why they redesigned the sensor and then why not make it the same size as the 5dIII ?
Is this a sensor we are going to see in a whole range of other cameras, including smaller compact type?
If ff cameras are more accessible and cheaper, they will also sell more of their lenses. There may be more profit in that, lenses seem to run on slower model cycles.

Shame that they didn`t fit the focus system of the 7D, but I guess they are trying to keep the products separate.

i didnt said 5D MarkII is a 'Bad' camera, its a fabulous camera, which take great photos and videos
But It could have a Better AF,, At least one which was present in x0 D serious was better. ( look at the one from Nikon ,, D700- A class leading 51 point - with great accuracy and speed)
As i mentioned before also, most of the Mark2 users will be happy and confident to use the central point ( i gussed so- i know few) and used to get the best, and sure that they all r scared to used other points and those are slow and most of the time in-accurate.

As i said, its relative , we r complaining the same because the better AF option was available with in reach by canon at that time when canon 5D2 , and lot more option was there with canon at this moment. ( Not asking the same 1 like 61point in Mark3,, they have to distinguish different levels of product) ,, its like 19 point from 7D or even 45 points from 1Dmark4.....
It could have been better.

Well since you mentioned it and I'm still learning, shooting in center point, does that only use the center cross af point? Because when I shoot my military stuff on either my 40d or T2i i always use center because I'm trying to focus on 1 subject in a busy scene. And sence the af is capable of -3 ev which to me means it can focus in a much darker enviroment would be great. Most of the time when I have focus issues is do more to a dark enviroment than anything else.

The differences between the 50D and 5D2 systems for example, while present, weren't that significant. Certainly I wouldn't rate the outer points of the 50D being better in most situations. Specifically the 5D2's outers were not slow or less accurate, providing the subject offered contrast in a suitable direction of course. The 6D following on from that should not be a significant issue.

Continuing complaining at this point isn't getting anywhere anyway. The AF system has happened. It is what it is, like it or lump it. If you want a new cheap(er) full frame Canon, you either get one of the last 5D2s around or wait for the 6D. If you really need more, there's the 5D3. And you're more than welcome to go to Sony or Nikon if you really want to, and get a different set of problems to complain about.

Even though it doesnt compare that well for pure photography to the Nikon, I sort of love the 6D.
It's something you see with Canons, but I think theyre focusing a bit on the videographer's features.

And may I say that for still subjects you dont need large amounts of focus points? I am using the 50D intensively for a year now and I use 99% of the time the center point only (when I AF). While on a tripod I either use MF (with or without LV) or another focus point. I imagine for sports you want more than a few focus points, but the 6D isnt really an actioncamera with its 4.5fps. By the way, a FF for action isnt something you see that often (Ok, the 1Dx) because one often likes the extra ''reach'' of crop sensors.
So I think the 6D is great just the way it is meant to be. So is my 50D, my 350D and even my 10 year old Canon G5.

I wouldn't say they failed, but they have a really weird way of pricing and differentiating their products.

The 6D will be bought I'm sure by a lot of people because there is currently a HUGE gulf in price between the better APS-C cameras and the 5D3. This will definitely get most people closer to the "FF dream" and those who aren't used to the better ergonomics of the 50D/7D/5D etc won't know what they're missing. I imagine it'll be really popular.

But it's definitely not a camera for me and that's okay. I just wish the 5D3 was a bit cheaper... it's not *that* evolutionary of a camera in my opinion.

I was not complaining nor arguing

Was sharing my though when i heard the much waited 'affordable FF camera '
i had a canon 40D and didnt had any complaints about the AF
But when something new came, we were expecting a better one, some time even if we never have any plan to buy 1
its all because we all here is very passionate about photography and love the gears from all manufacture and like to learn and listen to new things

We r also checking the specification about camera and gears like canon 1DX, nikon d4, Leica M9, 600mm f4, 800mm f5.6 and even 1200mmf5.6. Not because i am going to buy any of that( may be others case is different), but like to know more and wishing that it will be the best and will perform well

I know there is no such thig like perfect gears, all system and gears have its plus and cons

Any way, i just want to point of that, i already sold my whole gears
and last 1 month , i am waiting for the time to grab my first FF, it will be Nikon D800. But may have to wait another month

Come one come all Canon users looking for a well priced full frame camera which is not a joke. Nikon is now taking your orders on D600's and can offer you so much more than the 6D.

All joking aside Canon has some outstanding cameras and truly deserves its reputation but this camera seems to be a forced release. It is going to go up against the Nikon D600 in every review and will inevitably be exposed as a substandard, overpriced paper weight. The Wi-Fi and GPS features might appeal to some but the shear lack of other features should negate any advantage these 2 actually give it in the first place.

Personally I don't think it should be matched against the Nikon D600, because even if it might seem like the Canon 6D is the D600's rival, I think that the 6D is in a different level than the D600.
Anyways, I also agree with MoreBravo, it does seem like a forced release, the camera could've and should've been further improved, even if it meant higher price, to at least be a decent rival to the D600.

If they are each company's least expensive FF cameras with the same price tag, how can you say they are Not rivals?? This announcement made me seriously consider switching brand from canon to nikon. (Luckily, my collection of gear isn't too much to switch)

I will certainly wait for side by side reviews before committing myself to do so, but Canon messed up with 6D imo.

Well theoretically they should be rivals, but when you see the specs of each camera, the 6D is far inferior than the D600, to me it seemed like they did try to release a rival for the D600, but in the end, you can't compare the 6D against the D600, the D600 wins hands-down on almost everything (except GPS and Wi-Fi )
And I agree, Canon messed up with the 6D
