Hi guys,

I recently upgraded from a Canon 7D to a Canon 5D Mark iii.

This is my first full frame camera and I don't know how much graininess or noise I'm supposed expect in the RAW file.

1)I understand that the full frame has a larger number of pixels compared to the 7D, but I just want to make sure that the grains I'm seeing are not something to be worried about.

Also is there any banding in the skies in the shots below?

2)Could you guys please give me a list of other things that I should check for in the camera to make sure that it's working well.


I know I'm sounding all paranoid, but I've paid a lot of money for this camera and want to make sure that if there is something wrong, I get it replaced immediately.

Your photos aren't working (link is broken)...

I'm sure your camera is working absolutely fine, but you may just want to get out and shoot a whole bunch of frames at various ISOs and in AI Servo and continuous high shooting, just to make sure everything is working as it should.

In terms of noise, expect about a stop to two stops better on the 5D3 vs the 7D. So basically, ISO 400 on the 5D3 will have as much noise as the 7D does at ISO 100. It's not two stops at high ISOs, more like one, but still... the photos you'll get are going to have so much more definition to them than on the 7D... you're going to be pleased

I fixed the urls

I've taken the camera out yesterday and today ( early in the morning). Both these shots are at ISO 100 . I used a 3 stop Grad ND filter (singh Ray) in both shots with a 17-40mm f/4.0 L lens.

I'm hoping that these shots are what is expected straight out of the camera.

I exported both RAW files as full res jpegs without any correction in lightroom. Just a straight import and export. I did this so that it would be easier to evaluate the images.

Do let me know if the images are fine.

Well... OK, I had the 500D, which is a tad worse at high ISOs but ISO 12.800 looks almost like ISO 1.600 on my 500D. So it should be close to two stops when compared to the 7D.

I don't notice any banding in the skies, only dust spots from stopping down so much

No hot pixels either, so I think you're probably good to go.

I don't find anything in those pictures that looks worse than what my camera could produce. I'd say everythink looks perfect.
