Hai, I am shocked to read the specification of newly launched Canon FF Camera-- 6D

The first thing came into my mind is'' canon failed again to compete with Nikon ?"

What u guys think??

Canon Vs Nikon!!!
When ever these two giants launched their respective DSLR models,, nikon used to win the war ( not by the quantity of the bodis number which sold) by the specifications and due to the better product?
This was the history, a small change happen when canon launched their 7D! That time canon managed to tie up with D300s ( please keep in mind that eventhough 7D was a great camera- it tried hard co compete with2-3 year old nikon D300{ nikon D300S ultimately as same as D300} )

But then we witnessed the greatness from canaon in the form of 5D markIII
Its really compete well with nikon D800 and can even claim its victory ( eventhough D800's sensor is far superior to 5dIII-- shown by many reviews--but all other specifications, canon won the battle )

We all thought that canon didi thie home-work and will continue in the same manner!!

But,, just look at the 6D
its farrrrrrrrrrr inferior camera as compared to nikon D600

20 Mp Vs 24 ( not a big deal )
11 point AF vs 39 ( shame - dont even want to read it again)
1 point cross type AF vs 9
4.5 frames vs 5.5
No weather sealing....

at a same PRIZE POING??????

How many really think that GPS and wifi is more important than taking better pics in a better way

I remain very pleased with my Canon lenses. Camera bodies come and go.

It seems that a lower-spec full-frame is the flavor of the year, and neither manufacturer's offering in this new category excites me. The 5D Mark III seems, to me, to be worth its extra cost, if I buy a full-frame camera of this current generation.

One area where the new Canon announcement cleans Nikon's clock is the kit lens options. I'd much rather pay $800 for the 24-105mm f4L than $600 for the 24-85mm f3.5-5.6 lens Nikon is bundling with the D600.

GPS/WiFi is certainly nice, but it seems like a pretty poorly thought out camera in every other respect. Maybe Canon will surprise us and the new sensor will be markedly superior to any of their other bodies.

But sadly here in Germany the 24-105mm is a bit more expensive, around ~1200$ after "translating into dollars" (? Correct me if that sounds weird.). The Nikon 24-85mm costs just slightly more than the half of the 24-105mm.

The AF doesn't sound spectacular but the center AF points works at -3 EV - that's even darker than anything the 5D3 or 1DX can handle. That's not too bad.
The screen is quite good (as good as on all the new cameras, better than on the 5D2), it's smaller and lighter than any full frame DSLR before, the price it's released at is lower than it was on the 5D2 so it can be expected that the price will become lower in a while (of course not directly after it was released) and when you see what the GPS / WLAN accessories cost... OK, you don't have to use it.
And did I get it right? It has a touch screen? That's pretty nice when you are working in live view.
As far as I read it is weather sealed.

So I think it's alright. We'll just have to wait for sensor results and high ISO noise.

6D specs seems a bit like 5D Mark II


but if the price is low... I might get that as my first Full Frame... if not I guess I can just save money for a very long time getting my dream Leica M9-M, think I much rather like that ^^

though the 6D would be a fine replacement for my 40D

Canon is quite horrible when it comes to planning and making new products this year for still photographers..

though for Cinematographers its a great success and big surprise

I don't think Canon is interested in matching Nikon for this model. The ones that are going to buy this camera 6D are pros that want lighter 2nd body, or ppl with Canon crop bodies and lenses that want FF upgrade.

So, basically, is this more tempting than 5d2, is what Canon is asking.

The 6D sounds awfully like a rehashed 5D2 to me... ok, there's some new toys bolted on, but the fundamentals don't appear radically different, especially the AF system... I was using the 5D2 today as a substitute for the 7D which is out for repair, and that does strike home the difference between their AF systems...

Jiko - Your English is very good - vastly better than my childhood German, of which I remember just some words and phrases...

The meaning of "translate into dollars" is quite clear, it's just a point of usage.

'Translate' is usually used for speech / language - "Translate French into English."

'Convert' is used for amounts of items or data, etc. "Convert Australian Dollars into US Dollars" - "Convert TIFF images into JPEGs" - "Convert Kilometres into Miles", etc.

I enjoy your posts and learn a lot from them - the way you explain things is very useful to fairly new DSLR users like me.

In my opinion, the new 6D is a good camera, but as thomastaesu stated, I don't think Canon is trying to rival any Nikon camera. It seems a little strange to me that Canon released this camera at almost the same price point as the 5D MKII (according to their website). Personally I see the 5D MKII as a superior camera than the 6D, but it's a new camera, so I can't judge it just yet. The one thing that seemed like an interesting addition is the GPS and Wi-Fi capabilities, I'd thought in investing for a GPS or Wi-Fi accessory when I bought my first DSLR, but they're really expensive, so it's good to see a Canon DSLR that has these two features equipped.
Just a speculation of mine, but I think this sensor might be a really nice low-light performer.... maybe

I think I like the enhancements over the 5DII. I do think it could be $100.00 less. There are some things I do not need like the GPS, WIFI remains to be seen. I also don't like the whole video aspect of it, to me it is pure photography. I do think they missed out on the cross-type AF points. I mean, you have 41 of 61 on the 5DIII, couldn't they do 3 or 5 of 11 on the 6D?

I kinda wanted a rotating screen but not a major loss on that point. It would have also been nice to see 100% view finder but 97% is better than my 95% on my T2i/550D

I still won't be able to afford one ANYTIME soon, but I'm down for it.

Well I think that the GPS and Wi-Fi are a nice addition for people who might want that in a Canon DSLR but weren't willing to pay extra for the accessories. Also, I agree with the cross-type AF points, for a camera of that level, they could've made an improvement in the focusing system. Personally I think that even the Canon 650D has a better AF system, even if it has only 9 points, they're all cross type, and this is one of the lowest level Canon DSLRs, so I think that Canon really missed out those cross-type AF points.

Beware of the prize,, @ 2100 US$ its not at all an entry level camera, its may be the cheapest FF from canon, cant justify the specification at that prize.

Now We r close to finish the year 2012, imagine a DSLR that force to focus only using the centre point and re- frame like 10 years back,, come-on guys

At the end of the day, how big is the sensor, how great is the tonal range , how nice is the high ISO ,,,,,,, all these are not at all important, if we missed the focus!!

i was sure that that my 9 all cross type AF of 40 D was way better than my brothers 5D mark 2's af ( 9 point + 6 focus assist, 1 cross type? all that messed-up, he also only trusted the center point, always scared to used any thing else) do u thing its practical?

Canon is not addressing any Af fine tune , hopefully is not present

some may say that its not ideal to compare with Nikon, but remember its our hard earn money, we have to get the best
Compare closely with Nikon D600, canon 6D will fail in almost 90% of the specification, 100 % VF coverage, Dual card slots,, u just name it


I don't thing any pro's will found that these camera will serve as a back-up, ultimately for them, every shot count, and i am sure that 6D will fail to deliver because of the far inferior AF,, ( may be in studio set up, it will deliver- but thats just not only the purpose- )
