Hi everyone! Welcome to August's Assignment!

The theme for this month is "Seize the moment", as suggested by mikeroch who won the June 2012
competition. Be sure to read the whole post for the rules.

In Mike's own words:

"Great photographs result from being in the right place at the right time, knowing how to get the best from your equipment and, often, enjoying a modicum of old-fashioned good luck! In setting this task I've tried to leave the ultimate choice of subject very wide indeed so as to include as many participants as possible. Your submissions can be drawn from any area that suits your interests and availability of subjects. I've grabbed some examples off of the web which demonstrate the way I'm hoping the competition will go: Prince Charles about to disgrace himself, kids playing baseball and an Osprey snatching a fish from a lake... humour, sports action, wildlife, kids, pets and anything else that works is legitimate.... just no faked setups or composite images please. Let the photograph speak for itself.



Post Processing: Basic image cleaning and improvement, please tell us what you have done to the original image and the software you used."

The rules!

1: You can only submit one image and it MUST be taken during August 2012. Photos taken earlier will be disqualified!

2: All images submitted must be no more than 1024 pixels on their longest side, although you can include a link to a
full resolution version if you like. Flickr users must link back to the original version to comply with its latest rules.

As always, please exercise good judgement on what is suitable for the forum. Keep it clean and family-friendly or it'll
be removed. See the Forum Rules for guides.

Please include a sentence or two with your photo describing what you were trying to achieve and if there were any
particular challenges in doing so like, for example, any special exposure or lighting setup.

We're all enthusiasts here, so it's also great to see what equipment you used and the settings too. So please also

Post processing Color Efex tonal contrast and graduated neutral density filter, followed by Silver Efex High Structure preset vignette, border and burnt bottom edge


Maghrib is the announcement of sunset before Iftar, which is the breaking of the fast during Ramadan. This cannon marks the official time for sunset in downtown Dubai, and if you catch it right, you get the full blast in your image.

Its pretty hard to follow that !

I just got back from my hols in Rarotonga and whilst there went along one evening to a local beach BBQ and a firedance. Only had my little Canon Powershot compact with me and wasnt sure if the photos would work as it was pretty dark.

Anyway, started going through the photos this weekend and thought this one worked quite well.

The dance only lasted for a couple of minutes and the fire was pretty hot.

Post processing - usual auto correct, cropped and blackend edges. Removed a window glare.

This photo although may not look like it was an accident but when I got to the beach that morning there was a lady who was drawing in the sand words then saying a short prayer as the waves washed them away. Very emotional to watch. And a nice sunset to go along with it.

Snapped this on vacation in Berlin. My family and I could not skip Checkpoint Charlie while visiting the city, but I am glad we went there, since this turned out to be one of my favorite pictures. The American checkpoint, the flag, the soldier, and then there's a McDonald's and a guy wearing a Coca Cola shirt. Everything fell into place for a second, until the Coke guy turned sideways.

When I first saw this I thought the rotter blades had some kind of light in the tips so you could see the blades. It was explained latter that it is static that occurs in just the right conditions with the sand in the air. This was late at night, the light on the ground are generator/flood lights about 1/4 mile away.

It rains quite a bit on the West Coast of Scotland so when it chooses not to rain, we tend to get out and make the most of it. So it was last evening, a stroll along the main street was called for so I grabbed the DSLR on the way out more in hope than expectation. A glorious evening with the setting sun warming the rocks on the foreshore. Just by the post office something moved, hallelujah, not only was there an otter sunning himself but I had the right kit with me to capture the moment!

SUN has been a rare sight his year so it was good to see such a glorious sunny day with blue skies and heat which we could do with it now to dry the crops to get the harvest in.
Portmahomack is the only village on the east coast of Scotland that faces due west so we get lovely sunsets and I get lovely sunrises when we see the sun!!!!on the other side of peninsular
