I just joined and wanted to introduce myself. i'm fairly new to DSLR photography, although many moons ago I had an SLR ( in the dark ages! )
I have a Canon 600D with 18-55mm kit lens which I want to upgrade. I also have a 50mm f1.4 and 100mm f2.8L macro.
I thought about the 15-85mm over the 17-55mm simply becuse it has a greater range, and having the 50mm to cover low light situations. I did see that Gordon mentioned he would go for that also.
I would appreciate thoughts on that. :-)

Welcome aboard.

That and the cost difference are generally the reasons why you'd go for the 15-85mm over the 17-55mm if the f/2.8 aperture isn't a must have.

The 15-85 isn't quite as sharp as the 17-55 but compared to the kit lens, it is far superior.

Thanks for that Rorschach, I just wish the 15-85 had a fixed aperture too! But then it would probably cost the earth!
