As to the completion of Gordon's review of the D800 I've heard that he is currently in the process of developing the RAWs to see how they compare with the jpgs.

D800+assorted lenses

I feel very Lucky. The 800E arrived last week. I have been busy experimenting with it - taken lots of images to try and learn its limits. It certainly feels different from my D200, definitely quicker to focus and use. To be truthful I guess I was expecting a bit much from the camera after reading a lot of the hype that is around on the net.
So now I realize I am in for a long learning curve to get the most from this camera. Its extra sophistication has given me a lot more choices with focussing, plus the ability to utilize a wide range of ISO's and short cuts for everything, sees me needing to learn a lot about it.
I can certainly see huge potential.
I would post an image except I didn't realize I need a URL for the image in order to get it to display, I do not yet subscribe to any place where I post images for reference. Perhaps someone may recommend somewhere?
I am a very happy camper all in all!

This is the first Nikon offering that actually had me contemplating switch from Canon to Nikon. There is some reports that are making me hesitating : Tethering/remote liveview for still and LiveView implementation in movie mode. I am so used to the Canon EOS Utility and it working great. The first impression I read on the net are not favorable on that front. Of course, I would have to replace all my canon lenses with Nikon Lenses.

Well - if the lenses in you signature are all you have, the only lens you COULD use on a full frame Canon is the Sigma 70-200mm. And if you sell it you can get the Nikon version of that lens used for about the same price.

But: you could just as well stay with Canon and wait for whatever they will release in the future. The price for the 5D3 will fall, too - and apart from the sensor I really prefer it to the D800.

Sold my whole gear

(((Canon 40D+ EF 24-70, EF 70-200 f 2.8 IS usm)))

now has to order
new nikon d800+

new AF 80-200 f2.8 ED +

new AF 50mm f1.4 D or AFS 50mm 1.8

Brought my whole canon gears as used ( got a good trade) , but last week i found that there were few issues with my gears ( both lens), so my lesson is, never buy something second hand ( my lens were great in look, but canon service told me those were broken inside, like barrel part-- small fungus inside IS unite, back unites, etc, those i need to replace as they cant refit if they tried to open the portion ,,, and that replacement going to cost me lot???))
we don't know how those were used before. so decide to buy only things as brand new from this moment.. thats why i choose 80-200 as new rather than used 70-200( brand new 70-200 is out of my budget right now)
read many great reviews about 80-200,, but all were in much less MP sensors,like 12mp D700
how well 80-200 can handle these massive 36mp

af 50mm f1.4 D vs afs 50mm 1.8!!! which 1 you will choose?

If you're going down the old pro zoom f2.8 route, take a look at the 180 f2.8 as well - old lens, highly regarded, nice bokeh, poor man's 200 f2. You might save enough for another prime in the 24-35mm range

what about 80-200 D
is it good enough for d800
( i know its great @ nikon D700)
80 to 150 is the range i use most

wil check about 180 f2.8

plz give some light about 80-200

Gordon and Camera Labs nail it again!

Thx for the interesting comparo between D800 and Phase One.

I was glad to see that sharpening of the D800 snap brought it to within a hair of the Phase One IQ. Photoshop is a lot cheaper than the cost difference between the D800 and a Phase One with 40 or 60 or? Mp back. Now though, I wonder what happens when you sharpen a Phase One 40 or 60 or? Mp snap.

Totally blown away here by the noise comparison with the 5D III.
Awesome... The Nikon's really good, and it was me thinking that the 5D III would be much better noise-wise, well, ''RAW-wise'' that's certainly not the case! The Nikon (and lets be fair, the Canon of course too!) is really awesome for astrophotography. After youve paid so much for such a body, you dont have to buy an expensive mount for those long exposures, just bump the ISO to whatever you need instead of limiting at 6400 ISO

A day passed with D800
I am loving it
Yet to get rid of the memories from canon button layouts
Used to press and leave the buttons like i didi it with canon, need to come back to nikon's way
I am missing the giant ' wheel ' on the back of the camera, my thump is always searing for it
Grip is little un-comfort, may used to with it with in few days.. May due to the tiny lens attached( 50mm)?

So far only 1 problem-- may be two
rear Display is bit yellow-greenish
And Auto WB is not accurate, it is also 'yellow-greenish'
is that showing in the Display, so is it WB issue alone?
How to adjest the Auto WB setting get the right WB, I tried few values in Auto 2 option , yet to figure out the right value

I think the lcd display does not show you raw information but what you put in the jpg presets.
Try to change the picture control in the camera menu to neutral or some other setting. Sounds like saturation took a walk on the wild side.

How does the picture look in post processing?
Usually auto WB in nikon DSLR's is pretty accurate (I use it all the time on my D7000).
