Today I got a Motorola Defy Mini to replace my ageing non-smart phone. The Defy Mini is android based and has the usual features you'd expect, although it is a lower end model.

Of course, one of those features is the camera. I was actually shocked to hear the fake shutter noise when I took a test shot with it. Not that it had one, but how loud it was. The volume control does nothing to it, and you can't turn it off in any easy way. How loud was loud? Put it this way, a full frame camera in full on mirror slap is far quieter. The phone really set the volume to 11 on that one. Are they that paranoid about possibly taking photos when you shouldn't? My compact (HX9V) is a similar size to the phone ignoring thickness, and you can put the camera into silent running.

I did have a quick look around to see if there was a way to silence the camera on the phone. One suggestion was to go into silent mode, but it didn't help in my case. I don't know if that might be a different software version or something. Another one was to install a hacked OS, which isn't an option on my model (yet). There were also suggestions of 3rd party camera apps which can take photos without sound, but I've not been motivated enough to try yet...

I haven't downloaded the pics yet to see if I even want to use the camera... samples I saw in reviews suggest it isn't anything to write about...

Hi popo,

You could try downloading and installing this as an alternative sound effect. What every phone camera needs!

P.S. Perhaps we could start a brand new thread filled with alternative (family friendly!!!) camera shutter sound effects.

P.P.S. A late breaking thought: would that "tune" be about the right length to match the AF speed of the X-Pro1 on a dull day? :P
