Hai friends,

I am having a Canon 40D + EF 24-70 as good like new ( only 5500 shutter counts)( out of warranty)
and used Canon EF 70-200 f2.8 IS USM mark 1

today got an offer, used Nikon D700 + 24-70 F2.8 great condition( 6 months warranty remaining, shutter counts has to check - he said it will be less than 10,000) for an exchange

its really hard to neglect the offer- a full frame-- every bodies dream!!!

i really dont like the 5D mark 2,, both the AF and build( IQ is great- so never think about an up grade to 5D II from my 40D)

What u guys think about the offer?

my only concern is i will miss my 70-200 f2.8 as i am not in a stage to invest in the near future

Before my 40D, I had a nikon D90+ kit lens, trade that for canon, but i still love the nikon colours of of the camera

Ask yourself why do you want full frame? If you need it, you need it. If not, why are you looking for?

As Popo said do you really need full frame? By accepting the exchange you are loosing the brilliant 70-200mm and leaving yourself with only a 24-70mm. Whilst this is a great lens it leaves you with fewer options. Be sure to check out home much your gear is worth and compare it to how much his is worth. If my pricing is correct, which is highly doubtful, I would say yours is probably worth a little bit more than his. Nevertheless if it is close you may decided to just accept. Remember that by going full frame you will have a kit capable of going wider than ever before but you will loose a significant amount of reach.

I would personally say keep your kit and start saving for a 5D Mark III. The price of this camera is dropping already. Even if it takes you a while to save up at least you won't limit your options with photography in the mean time. If you did the exchange you would probably end up saving for the Nikon 70-200mm!

The 70-200/2.8 lens is a great one, from all the reports.

Really, you have an excellent combination. I'd save for a Canon FF body. Maybe there's even a less expensive 5D MkII around!

The glass is the important thing.

Retain your current body too and have the best of both worlds!

You could change and then try to get an additional old (not so expensive) used Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 in order to be able to keep the focal length and aperture but missing IS and USM.

But... yeah, with those lenses you have I probably wouldn't.

an used or new 80-200 ( less than 1000 usd)

many reviws said that its mechanically brilliant, and build quality is greater than the new 70-200 vr2 and optically as equal to vr2!!!
but what about the AF speed, heard that D700 had a better torque motor than D90, D200 etc, will it helps?

in my exchange, i will probabily get 200-250 usd from him, so i can work on a new 80-200.


But for the moment, i am leaning more toward keeping my gear,, because of brilliant 70-200

As Popo said, unless you know you need full frame, I would keep the 40D and your two lenses. Losing the 70-200 would feel more like a downgrade.

Wow that is hard! You know: I would actually lean towards going ahead with the trade, if I were able to buy a 70-200 or 80-200 relatively quickly. The camera is way better hands down, though I agree with the people here that Full Frame isn't necessarily something you must have. There is another thing you need to consider: bodies aren't the most important part of your equipment. Bodies age rather quickly, while lenses will stay useful and retain a lot of their worth a lot longer.

But looking purely at the quality of the stuff you are being offered and considering what your current body (the 40D) can do compared to the D700 I would really have to think more than twice about rejecting such a great offer.
