I handled a D4 yesterday at a local dealer, in nearby Houston, TX, which was actually my second time to do so. The previous time, the demonstrator D4 had a quite heavy 24-70mm lens mounted, which obviously meant a very heavy combination. Yesterday, the D4 had a comparatively tiny 50mm 1.8D, and of course, the difference in weight and handling was dramatic.
It is difficult for me to remember for certain, as it has been a while since I handled a D3 or D3s, but the D4's controls and handling qualities seem to be a bit more favorable for my hands. While I am in no position, financially, to buy a D4, or Canon 1D X, at present, I am going to be attentive to these two cameras, as both will likely be current in the 2013 to 2015 time period, when I may well retire from public service, and be in a position to use tax-deferred savings to purchase a professional-level camera to use in either a second career, or volunteer work.
