I was looking for budget DSLRs lately as an upgrade to my superzoom SX20 and I found the Canon Rebel T3 and the T3i. I am on a really tight budget so I thought I would go after the T3, but after reading both cameras' review, I found out that the T3i had a big advantage over the T3 except for the price. So my question is whether I should buy the T3 or wait and save my money for the T3i. I'm also looking for a telephoto lens to buy for either camera.

PS: Also take in consideration I wouldn't buy a lens that isn't Canon

I have the T2i which is basically the same camera as the T3i it just doesn't have the swivel screen and a few other bells and whistles. I think you would be happier with the T3i because it has a lot of features that the T3 doesn't. The screen is bigger and has a higher resolution and 18 megapixel vs 12 megapixel. You can type in T3 vs T3i in google and get all the info you need.

The higher megapixel count is all well and good but unless you're doing large prints, whether it's a huge advantage is open to debate. More megapixels doesn't necessarily mean better.

It's true that the 600D/T3i has more features compared to the 1100D/T3 but if you're not going to make regular use of them, you may have to question whether it's worth the premium or not.

I've said it in another thread but even though 600D has several advantages over the 1100D on paper, in the real world, you may not notice a huge amount of difference depending on what photos you take. Googling the two bodies won't give you all the info you need as a dry list of facts doesn't tell you the whole story plus the idiom that your mileage may vary from subjective reviews.

What money you'd save with the 1100D, assuming that you don't need or won't make use of the 600D's on-paper benefits, can go towards a sharper lens, which give better quality images or more flexibility in terms of aperture and depth of field.

I'm not advocating either body, nor am I rooting for the underdog but you should bear in mind that the arguably superior body is not guaranteed to give you better pictures. Maybe it's worth handling both at your local CE/photography store before deciding?

Is there a specific reason why you won't buy non-Canon lenses? Brand loyalty can limit your options more than you might realise e.g. the Tamron 70-300mm is reportedly sharper than its more expensive Canon (non-L) equivalent and Tokina's 11-16mm f/2.8 lens has no direct rival from Canon.

Id go for the T2i to be fair, it's almost the same as the T3i but at a smaller price point.

I actually do use my camera quite often but the MP aren't a huge concern, I don't print large.
Also the reason I don't like third-party lenses is because the Canon software won't recongize the lenses and I find it quite useful for peripheral lighting correction and chromatic aberration.
The T2i is hard to find new or refurbished, also I'm used to the flip-out screen for video.
Also I forgot to mention that I am a huge fan of DSLR video and the T3i has manual exposure, external mic input, Full HD, 60 fps at 720p; unfortunately the T3 has none.

There is a little difference, but... it's not enough to get the 550D over the 600D

Looking at the prices in Germany...
Canon EOS 550D / T2i with 18-55mm IS II lens: 605€
Canon EOS 600D / T3i with 18-55mm IS II lens: 619€
Personally I'd rather go for the 600D / T3i with that little difference in price.

Yeah, that's why I'm not considering the T2i.

I'm really happy with my T2i. I looked at the T3 but I didn't like the feel of it and the screen is smaller and only has 230.000 dot rez vs 1,000,000 dot on the T2i. To me there was no comparison.

Yeah you're right, but I think that the T3i is better than the T2i, in price they differ for around $100 USD.

I think your desire for video, and the articulated screen, has answered your own question - it's the T3i/600D.

I have the 600D, and then used a friend's 1100D (T3) for casual shooting at her son's birthday party. The 1100D/T3 felt smaller, more 'plasticky', less featured.

I could just be used to and prefer my camera body, though. I suggest that you go to a shop and handle both.

Yeah, I guess my final decision is for the T3i, thanks for the advice.
