Camera Labs

Hello there,
i am looking for a device that will allow me to copy files from standard SD cards, and view photos on it.

But tablet is big, netbook even bigger and ultrabooks are expensive for such simple tasks.

So possibly some mobile phone, but i did not found one with standard sd card slot. Or is it?

Some suggestions for this tasks, or how do you solve problems like this in field?

You haven't really explained why you would like to do this and the reason will help to give you a solution.

1) Do you want to do this as the screen on the back of the camera is not big enough (or high enough resolution) for you to review images?
2) Do you want to do this as you are running out of space on your memory cards and just want to clear them to reuse?

If the reason is 1 then a mobile phone might be just as restricting. If the reason is 2 then investing in an EyeFi SD card might help or just a hard drive with an auto backup feature and sd card reader.

reason two.

Harddrive is not an option, because wall socket is not always available. It seems netbook would be best option, but they dont offer any good resolution (7'' huawei tablet offers 1280x720 resolution - now even few smartphones do, while classic atom netbook only 1024x600...)

I also want to be able to browse some slideshow on web, or basic navigation with google maps (and classic stuff like mail, some basic photo editing, and so ). Harddrive is one use item. But maybe windows 8 tablets might offer functionality like this

Hmm, tablets seem to have all that you want, aside from a large HDD. Take a look at some of the newer Toshiba models, or the Transformer Prime with the keyboard dock. I've used the Prime for a couple of hours in the past, it zips along nicely with ICS and the quad core Tegra 3. Plus, the dock offers a longer battery life, plus amenities such as a card reader and full sized USB port.

You may want to hold out for W8 tablets, they'll offer large HDDs, great specs and more software. For instance, you'll be able to run a full version of CS. Keep in mind though, this will probably all come at a premium price tag.

To just back up memory cards you could look at the Wolverine flashpac/picpac range of storage

Sizes from 80GB to 500GB, they read straight from SD card to disk and they are battery powered.

For all the other stuff you will need some type of mobile computing device, be it a smart phone, tablet, ultraportable, netbook, or laptop.

It seems samsung galaxy s3 (or something like that) will solve most of my problems, with addition of another 32gig SD card...

It will? I'm pretty sure the Galaxy S3 uses micro SD cards, not standard SD cards, as you mentioned in your first post. And it has the same ... non-good resolution (1280x720) that you also mentioned previously.

It's for exactly those reasons that I recently bought a "new" iPad--standard SD cards w/ "camera connection kit" and "retina" 2048x1536 resolution. As an aside, it also does "basic navigation with google maps (and classic stuff like mail, some basic photo editing".

If you're willing to wait, it's rumored that Apple will be releasing a 7" version in August. (Although resolution will likely be lower.) Or there's also the upcoming ASUS Transformer Infinity HD TF700T (whatever they end up calling it) with 1920x1200 resolution and better GPS performance (without a dongle).

If you are looking for extra storage, Vincent Laforet posted an interesting option on his blog which is compatible at least with the iPhone / iPad line of products, and might also work for other post-PC-era devices also. Coupled with a camera connection kit (which includes an SD card), that could give you an interesting option for either the iPhone 4s or an iPad. The G-Connect can plug in a wireless router, or it can act as its own router if you're in the middle of nowhere. It can also run off a battery pack.

So yeah, iPhone 4s with camera connector kit will solve most issues, and the G-Connect should be usable for extra storage (but I would read more on this before buying, I'm only 90% sure of how it works).

The iPad has a camera connection kit available. This is basically a sd card reader that plugs into the bottom of the iPad and allows you to transfer files. It is an optional extra that costs around £30 I think but I can tell you it works pretty well. I can't say I have much of a need for it... but it would perform what you want it to perfectly
