Since it has been a little too quiet on this forum, I thought it has been enough time to launch another question survey.

So this topic is broad:
What is the next big camera related item you plan, or at least giving serious thought, on buying?

This can be anything from a lens to a new body to software or a tripod.
If it is camera related, and not something like filters or cleaning equipment, then it is valid.

Why limit this to Canon subforum?

Actually, my next semi-major purchase is in significant part a filter. But it is no ordinary filter. It will cost more than the optics it will connect to and many lenses I've bought previously. I'm looking at getting a Calcium K-line filter, and a cheap telescope (100mm refractor) to use it on since my existing scope isn't ideal for the application. I think I can get away with a cheap scope since I will only be doing narrowband imagine so any flaws in the scope wont manifest so readily. Combined, the two will give a highly affordable solar scope looking at the opposite end of the spectrum from my existing one.

I must be very frugal through early August, and somewhat frugal for the rest of 2012. Pro-level lens purchases are unlikely for all of 2012, and considering I already have some really good EF lenses, no Canon lenses are likely to be coming home with me for a while. I am feeling a need for some good filters, primarily circular polarizers and neutral density filters, to deal with the intense summer sunshine. The prices for multi-coated filters are in conflict with being frugal!

I may, perhaps, trade a couple of Canon flashguns for credit toward a Nikon SB-910, which is the leading Nikon flashgun. When I do start using radio triggers, I can use Nikon flashguns with my Canon cameras. By trading, I can maintain the frugality goal. As my signature lines indicate, I do shoot with Nikon film cameras, including an F6 that can make full use of the Creative Lighting System.

My wife shoots with a Nikon D7000, and she prefers zoom lenses, presently using a Tamron 18-200mm Di II. I will probably have a chance to again work extra hours during in November and December, and may try to buy her a Nikkor 16-85mm or 18-200mm. Neither is loved by pixel-
peepers, but both are favored by some very serious enthusiasts, plus some noted professionals who
prefer to travel light. I am also looking at the 28mm 2.8 AI-S, a manual-focus gem that is still in
limited production. Yes, my next lens purchase is likely to be a Nikkor.

Cameras? I am paying close attention to reviews of the 5D3 and Fuji X Pro 1, and will be looking for previews and reviews of the 1D X, but purchases on this level will have to wait until 2013 or 2014, or beyond.

Next thing? Canon EOS 5D Mark III. Maybe together with a 24-105mm lens. If not together, the lens will follow not too long afterwards. But as I might save 100-200€ I guess I'll just take the package of both even if it takes longer to save the money.

For Mother's day, for my wife, a small point and shoot. She wants a camera small enough to fit in her pocket with more than the 4X optical zoom of her Sony TX-9. I probably will get her a Sony WX-150 (10X optical zoom) but I still have a couple of days to decide. As a size reference, she tells me my Canon 500HS is too big for her.

no no, take 15-85, its way better...

well i am looking for some longer lens, but i am the most uncertain person in the whole world right now, so it might be 70-200F2.8L IS II, 70-200 F4 L IS with 1.4 extender, or 70-300 F4-5.6L...

it seems there are no better choices

In response to popo,

The reason I have this in the Canon subforum is that is generally the only portion I regularly visit.
I enjoy reading peoples opinions and want to make sure the question is on the forum I am reading.

So while technically this is probably not the best location for this question, I do not see it as being essentially wrong.

You could think of it this way, since I am a Canon shooter, I am asking what is going through other Canon shooters' minds, but also welcome the thoughts of other people.
I cannot help it if they settled for something other than Canon. /joke

I'm after the 15-85 next for personnel. I've also convinced my unit in the Army to get me something better since I just damaged my personnel lens. Trying to find what they have in the supply system. They do have a Nikon kit with so much stuff and 2 bodies I would bet it is about $15,000 worth of gear but I don't think they'd do that for me

Three months ago I bought the Canon T2i (I'm loving it) and two weeks ago I bought the EF 70-300MM F4-5.6 IS USM LENS and so far I'm impressed with the IQ. My next purchase will be the EF-S 15-85MM 3.5-5.6 IS USM LENS. It seems to have excellent reviews but it's going to take a while to save the money. I've been borrowing two lenses from my dad (18-55 and 55-250 kit lenses) but it was about time I got my own. The 18-55 lens is the original version with no IS and very cheep feeling.

I got a 15-85mm recently after I decided the 17-85mm wasn't worth buying since it suffers noticeable distortion at the wide angle (which I would be using regularly), reportedly even worse than the kit lens. I'm delighted with the IQ and how the focusing speed matches my other lenses now. It was an expensive investment but I think it was a worthy one at the same time. I'll have to order a decent filter to complement it.

Right now, I'm pretty happy with my choice of lenses. I think my next major purchase (months away) is likely to be a body upgrade, either a 60D or a 7D.

There's a couple possibilities that slot into the "next purchase" category, although some of them are longer-term investments :)

First up is probably a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod with the standard 3-way head, because I'm tired of my old tripod (built in West Germany) that doesn't hold the camera steady at all and is really unfriendly in the cold weather. I figure I'll probably purchase this before the summer is over :)

Next up is the longer-term investments:
1) Canon 24mm f/1.4 II L lens because I'm finding my 35/1.4 is just not quite as wide as I'm requiring at some of the venues I'm shooting at
2) Canon 50mm f/1.2 L because while my 50/1.8 is an awesome lens for what it cost me, my primary photographer wants to stab me in the face whenever I stop it down because it's suddenly *pentagonseverywhere* and that just doesn't jive with the way we both shoot at this point. I'll definitely hang onto my 50/1.8 for trips and whatnot, but I need something with a faster aperture and better build, not to mention that I *love* the look it produces, even with the "imperfections" like spherical aberrations.

I'm definitely going to get the 24 first, partly because my primary is begging me to, but also just because I'd like the ability to go truly wide without having to rent.

I'm sure that in a year or two I'll have enough cash on hand to buy a 5D3, but I've decided that for now I can make due with the AF in the 5D2 and invest in lenses instead.
