Tamron have the "VC" benefit to play on though. If the lens is decent optically, I think the addition of VC will swing a lot of people away from native lenses.

Of course: This is the added benefit for the Tamron.

Lensrentals have quickly tested the MTF of the Tamron against the mk1 Canon, and the Tamron has the advantage.

Good catch, thanks for the heads-up, popo!
Sounds promising, esp. the part about the (minimal) variance of three tested copies.

popo, thanks for the link! It looks like Tamron might well be a valid choice for Canonistas looking for a lens in this range, given the projected price of the 24-70mm 2.8 II. As Thomas indicated, however, Nikon shooters are not paying so much more to get a Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8, so the choice is not so clear. It will be interesting to see real data and images from the Nikon-fit version.

I hope to pit the Tammy against the Nikon as soon as it is available. On a D800 naturally to give you the best insight in how these lenses perform

Another review from ephotozine on a Canon 5Dii.
The charts look pretty good, albeit corner-performance at 70mm makes a huge jump from f5.6 to f8.0. The other issue seems to be a strong light falloff of 2.5EV at 70mm.
Would be interesting to see how this baby performs on a D800...
Oh, and btw.: Prices are gravitating towards 1100 EUR (incl. 19% VAT) whereas the Nikon is hovering around 1500 EUR.

The first online-dealer claims that the lens will be available in "2-3 days".
Let's see...

ThatNikonGuy did a review of this Tamron and it seems quite good. Not quite as good as the Nikon/Canon lenses, but close enough for most people.

The VC looks great, and for anyone who also does video, that would be a must.

Nice Thomas! I am really interested in how this lens compares in terms of image quality to the Canon/Nikon version. The addition of VC is the main draw to this lens. I look forward to hearing your opinion :D

No comparison to Canon equivalent unfortunately. But will pitch it against the Nikon 24-70/2.8G.

Yes I realise that Thomas. I understand your comparison will be against Nikon as that is what you have used :D A comparison to the Nikon version will allow me to subsequently compare it to the Canon version though.
