I am on the verge of getting my first ever DSLR, and i'm pretty sure i've settled on the EOS 550D. The main reason i want it is for night/astro photography, does anyone know if this is the best choice, i hear that its not that great in low light?

Thanks.

It is as good as any other standard Canon except the recently announced 60Da which will be far above budget. Canon tends to have more support for astrophotography than other brands.

Personally I'd go for the 600D as the screen might get handy.
(At least I'd have loved it working with my 500D on my brother's telescope)

I agree with Jiko on the 600D. I have one myself. The titly flippy swiwelly screen is very useful at times, for video, astro, macro and other things
