Morning all

first time post here so please be gentle.

I have allways thought i had an eye for a realtively good photo and have just bought my first SLR - canon d550 with a canon IS USM 17-85 lens.

There is a world wide photo comp that the company i work for is running titled "forgotten infrastructure" and i figured i should give it a bash.

I have never tried taking photos in the mist before which i now know is quite challenging and also i was struggling with getting the entire photo in focus. I have played with some of the basic photo properties to get the final desired shot but i need some pointers to possibly improve the overall quality of the shots for entry to the comp and are they any good as a calander shot ???.

Any pointers and advice would be greatly appreciated.

The photos must be a landscape shot and the winning 12 shots will forma company calander for 2013.

stands back and awaits the critique ! i think i am limited to around 3 images to be submitted so..what you reckon.

You captured some good scenes there, Rob. My fav is IMG_0257 color2, as it is not so symmetrically captured as IMG_0262 color1.
The autumn colors look lovely through the mist.

Nice captures, I also love 0257, but I think that I prefer the more vivid colours of colour1.

You did a good job creating a good amount of depth with the mist, however, IMO 0244 seems a little flat, and I'm not a big fan of the composition. Otherwise, excellent captures!

I have some othre ideas for the "forgotten infrastructure" theme which i am off to explore this weekend. i have a month before the competition closes and the trees here are really now in the middle of turning with extremely bright blue skies.

Nice shots once again! I'm not a huge fan of the second, it seems too centred, and the pole in the middle of the bridge is distracting. That's my personal taste though - they're all excellent!

i tend to agree about the pole.. its a shame..i should have probably chopped it down then put it back after i finished

im working on some further shots to compliment my submission.. the closing date is June..so im hoping for some early snow on a few other locations..

Those are really great pictures, you really managed to capture the beauty in these shots.

In any competition you really need to know what the judges are looking for and where a particular judges bias may lay. There are some judges who maybe really fed up of a particular type of shot or technique, others will try to second guess how much of the shot was caught in the camera and how much post processing has taken place. If possible you should look at previous entries that have done well and maybe research the judges to see what type of shots they take/like.

You could enter the same shot for 5 different competitions and it will not perform as well in every one.

As for the subject when you say a landscape shot is that the orientation of the image or the subject. I am sure there are many abandoned factories or industrial areas that would make great images under the heading "forgotten infrastructure". Alternatively pictures of a canal, the transport highways of the past, could also be interesting.

Hey Keystroke, yep all good points and duly noted. Landscape as in the paper layout.

The competition is relatively new and has only been running for 2 years. Its within our company (approx 2500 employees) so there is a good chance i will be one of the finalists as i cant see everyone entering ! i hope not anyway !

Last years flavor was "lines in our landscape" this is much more suted to me but i wasnt really in to phtography as much then as i am now.

Also the timing of the event is a little early for us here and it would have been better to have a closing date of say late july to give the option of a winter scape on some old buildings etc.

In the end i submitted 5 photos of 2 subjects (the bridge here being one subject)...it states in the rules that we can enter up to 5 shots (not 3) and can have up to 2 presented in the winning calendar.

I did look back at last years calendar and there are some nice shots, a lot have been processed, some heavily and some not so.

I think it will get harder as the years go on and people start taking interest.

Still...the submission is in...lets see what happens !

One of my photos has been chosen for the calander !!!! just not the one i hoped it would be

Still out of over 400 entries i cant complain !
