Just came across a video of a bird on youtube that is even imitating the singing of other birds around it.

What the purpose of this might be, remains in the dark for me. But there's something amazing and highly fitting for this website in this video that made me think immediately of posting it here:

That is funny, I came across Lyrebird two weeks ago during a walk in a national park. When I heard him I tried to sneak up, but in the dense bush he got away. I did get a shot of the tail feathers, they are very quick, but deleted it later.
The only shot I do have is this rather poor shot from a few years ago taken with Sony A 100 in poor light and way too slow shutterspeed.
They are amazing to listen to, chainsaws, mobile phone rings other birds etc.

Getting a better shot of these is on my list, they is a few spots within an hours drive around here.

It's unbelievable how a bird with such a tiny brain can imitate sounds so complex. That was one of my thoughts when watching the video.

went for a drive with the family today, while we were walking in the Tarra Bulga National Park came across this Lyrebird. He was a bit quick for me and had to use the flash as it was fairly dark.

the bird learns new sounds to impress the female birds. The bird that knows more sounds is more likely to be a good partner and mate.
At first it's funny, but realising that the bird also mimics a chainsaw makes you wonder.
The bird mimics the sound of the device that is destroying it's habitat and eventually destroys his species.

Wow, thank you for posting these photos, maxjj! I'm impressed that you could catch this guy on camera and then so neatly.
If that was one of "our birds" here in Germany it would be long gone before you had the chance to take a photo.
I enjoyed looking at this lyrebird so detailedly.

And, Schultze, ... yes, it's fascinating and sad at the same time that the lyrebirds are influenced by our civilisation. We have to take care that this planet will still be usable in a hundred or two hundred years even. Sometimes I really wonder about mankind.
