I v only had compact cameras be4 but now looking for something better; price do matter but also want a camera I can enjoy for a long time

If you're looking to record video, the D3100 is the only choice.

However, I always recommend you hold both cameras in your hands to get a feel of them and navigate through their menus first.

I'd also consider lenses as well, which may influence which body to buy.

I d like to record videos but it wont be what i will be doing every single time kinda

I v held both and both feels ok, not that the shop where that helpful....

they are both sold with 18-55 lenses

At the moment, the 1100D is more comparable to the D3100 - the 1000D is one generation behind the 1100D.

If its JUST photos, Id save my money and get the 1000D - Its very cheap, a far greater cheaper than the D3100 and its still a very good camera - and similar in almost everyway to the 1100D.

If the price between the 1000 and the 3100 are small, I would jump to the 3100 just because its a more current model and probably more usefull with the video function.

If money is a serious Issue, 1000D all the way - then save your money later for better lenses - then in say, 5-8 years, buy a new body.

well I dont know enough about these kind of cameras or the lenses so I m very open to more information about that and also what the different kinds are good for/

Money is an issue, but i can afford the canon or nikon, i v found them to very good prices :around 3000 nok included with the 18-55 lense
The nikon was more expensive if i bought it with 2 lenses but they said i could have it for 3000 nok with just the one lense(though i find it odd that they are charging then 3000 for just the 2nd lense????????????)

Yes, the 1000D has no video recording to speak of, hence why I said originally that the D3100 is the only choice between it and the 1000D if you're after video recording - its successor, the 1100D, however does support video recording. The most likely reason why the 1000D is less expensive than the D3100 is that the retailer probably wants to get shot of old stock.

It may not be that odd that the retailer would charge 3000NOK for another lens. In the grand scheme of things, that's not a lot of money for a lens - I purchased two of my lenses for more than that apiece. Out of interest, what was the other lens in question?

You need to adopt a different mindset when moving from a compact to a DSLR, with a compact, you're just buying one product i.e. the ownership is usually an end state from purchase but owning a DSLR is a constantly evolving state where you may buy lenses and other accessories over the years.

To answer your question, in order of release it is: Canon 1000D, then the Nikon D3000 came out, then came Canon 1100D (the upgrade to the 1000D which adds video fucntion etc) then the Nikon D3100 came out, which also adds video function

So

Canon 1000D = Nikon D3000 - No video on both

Canon 1100D = Nikon D3100 - Video fucntion added plus some extras

Basically if you JUST want something to take photos only, then the choice is easier. The 1000D is behind the 3100D because it came out quite a while ago and doesnt have some of the functions that the 3100D has - mainly movie mode.
