I think in part the problem is the answer is not a simple one. If they give a simple answer, people will find the exceptions and claim shenanigans. And the long answer is probably too long and irrelevant in practice. This is something I frequently have to deal with at work. Marketing want a simple figure to stick in the related material. But often the results vary significantly with conditions, and simplifying is very challenging. The jpeg only value is probably a result of a compromise. They need to say something, and the jpeg audience is arguably different from the raw one, so they can get away with this.

Hi folks,

It's all fluff but it's fun fluff and nice eye candy (fluff + candy = candy floss? ) even if it could have equally well been shot on a 5D2 so far as I can see:

Thank you Canon France for the upload. 8)

Bob.

Even if some of the much-discussed image and performance improvements are minimal, I am happy with just about everything I read about the 5D3. I elected to get a pre-owned 5D, and then wait to see what the 5D3 offered, and am glad I did so. (The money saved enabled me to buy a 580EX II.) The dual memory card slots, alone, justify my waiting, and for the 5D3 to have been made to be much like my beloved 7D cameras will be a big plus when/if I do eventually buy a 5D3. At this point, the only DSLR competing with the 5D3, for my attention, is the 1D X. The prices of a 5D3 plus battery grip will put me within financial striking distance of a 1D X. If Bjorn can patiently save money for a Leica M9 and Leica lenses, I can save for a 1D X, for which I already have lenses.

I, too, am pretty excited about the 5D3 and inspired by Bjorn as well, I have been saving up (and waiting) for the 5D3 for a while. I will not be going all out on a 1D X as that is too big for my taste. I just want the dynamic range and high ISO capability in the slightly smaller package. Just a month or two more and it shall be mine! Hopefully. If it's in stock, that is.

Hi SpartanWarrior,

Are you in the right sections with that post? Why link to D800 sample images that don't even have a 5D3 comparison? :?

Bob.

Hi wordynoodles,

Thanks for the heads up and welcome to the forum.

The forum is in a state of transition at the moment and our normal link to affiliate sites (here) isn't visible. I'm sure you'd like to help keep the lights on here at CameraLabs so I've edited the link you supplied so that it arrives at the same page but via our affiliate link.

Bob.

P.S. And no, I'm not on commission. Like all the Mods I'm a volunteer.

Translated from Norwegian to English so bear with the grammar errors, but it gives a very decent preliminary 5D Mark II vs Mark III on ISO performance.
I recommend checking out the "ISO 50-102400, RAW (from ACR 6.7 RC) with 85 mm f/5.6" since the images are most equal with that converter.

Am not sure if UK or NZ customers have been hard done by, however Unfortunately Canon have tacked on an extra $900 on tho the price tag here in Oz, and it's retailing for $4399 Body Only!

Absolute joke when you consider that it's selling for $3500 flat in the US, and our dollar is stronger thatn theirs at the moment!

Almost makes me want to switch camps as the Nikon D800 is considerably cheaper down here, and it would be easy to do so had I not invested so much in Canon Glass. Will end up selling my EF-S lenses anyway as they won't work on full frame, but still have at least two EF leses that will work on a 5D Mk III.

If you buy a grey import and bypass canon Australia the price is the same as in the US. Its also still very early , there is a lot of places that are taking pre-orders. It will come down with time.

Have considered that, however have been told that there's no Oz warranty.

Still, will wait, save and bide my time. I have over $3500 towards it so far, and there's bound to be more competition from Camera shops, and Digital Rev have advertised it with local warranty for $3979. Still a bit pricey though, and I really think the boys at Digital Rev can do better.

I handled a 5D Mark IIi this evening, at a local Canon dealer, as was very pleased that it felt VERY familiar in my hands, like my 7D cameras. All the controls that I tried were in familiar locations. AF was very fast and accurate, with the 24-105mm lens. This one moves to the top of my wish list! :)

Patience...... It will be some time before a III is affordable.

Hi Gordon,

I just reviewed your ISO noise comparison between 5DM2 & 5DM3, subtle differences at low ISO more noticeable at/above 6400.

Couple things:

Can you do a comparison of long exposures (like 20 seconds or so) with NR off as well as long exposure noise reduction off to compare fixed pattern noise between "new" and "old"?

Have you seen any of the black haloing artifacting seen in the star highlights of the canon photo example at ISO800?

Thank you for the comparison shots!
