Hi everyone! Welcome to March's Assignment!

The theme for this month is "Street photography", as suggested by kimchi who won the January 2012 competition. Be
sure to read the whole post for the rules.

In kimchi's own words:

"I’d like March’s assignment to focus on the genre of street photography.

Extra rules: Focal length must be 50mm or less in 35mm terms, so please
include some EXIF data in your description.

Wikipedia: Street photography is a type of documentary photography that
features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets,
parks, beaches, malls, political conventions and other settings.

Post-processing: Many people think street photography should capture
the raw street culture as-is with no processing or even cropping. I disagree.
Street photography lends itself well to B&W which in itself is a form of post-

limited your interpretation of the genre - colour or B&W."

The rules!

1: You can only submit one image and it MUST be taken during March 2012. Photos taken earlier will be disqualified!

2: All images submitted must be no more than 1024 pixels on their longest side, although you can include a link to a
full resolution version if you like. Flickr users must link back to the original version to comply with its latest rules.

As always, please exercise good judgement on what is suitable for the forum. Keep it clean and family-friendly or it'll
be removed. See the Forum Rules for guides.

Please include a sentence or two with your photo describing what you were trying to achieve and if there were any
particular challenges in doing so like, for example, any special exposure or lighting setup.

We're all enthusiasts here, so it's also great to see what equipment you used and the settings too. So please also

SRI LANKAN STREET MARKET

Carrying my Canon G10 Powershot like a handbag (hence the slightly mystified expression on the face of the middle guy!) while it clicked away taking batches of 10 frames on automatic, this was one of only 2 shots out of 40 that had any potential.




EXIF INFO: taken 0540 GMT or 1110 local time, 3-3-12. ISO 400, 1/100th sec @ f.4. Focal length 6mm (ie. full wide angle for this camera)

PP: Desaturate, crop, adjust contrast, mild sharpen.

Duty officer at the Volunteer Marine Rescue, Point Danger. This was shot was through darkened glass, I wondered why he did not stir when I put the camera to my eye, I didn't realise he was resting his eyes.

Street photography is a "bridge too far" when it comes to my personal comfort level...

No, it wasn't a posed shot for a photograph so I hope it qualifies as "street" - the kids were actually listening to a lecture about ducks! So far as anyone can tell all that the ducks were thinking was "Where's the bread?"

This is the first time I submit anything, so I hope it goes well and you don't demolish me with your critique (just kidding).

This was taken in Moscow, Russia. I found this lady praying outside the church. She looked very weak and obviously age has taken its toll on her. I like to think of this picture as an abstract representation of elderly people in Russia. They're weak, they have been swept aside by the winds of change, but they refuse to stay at home, to become another piece of furniture.

Just had a great walkabout in the Gold and Spice Souks in Deira, Dubai. Armed with a 50mm f1.4G on the D700, so all good for this month's assignment. Which one to pick?

"drive-by shooting": ... sitting in a car, shooting through the window pane while arriving at the street's corner, going along with the subject to reduce motion blur ... being amazed by all the colours that advertisement is trying to catch your attention with in an otherwise dull world

Fremont Street, Las Vegas, NV. A lot of things to take for street photography but this really stood out. This gentleman is hand making a clay sculpture as she sits there and then mounts it on a nice plaque. His work was amazing.

Shot in RAW; f6.3, 1/160sec, iso800. Did a little touch-up in CameraRAW

You see a lot of this around Paris when the supermarkets throw away the food that is supposed to be past the 'consume by' date, which does not seem to bother everyone, though not everyone has the choice to be picky. The clothing banks seem to attract the crowds too.

Quite a contrast to the usual tourist photos of the beautiful Paris monuments.
