Jiko,

for your camera you would need to shoot 31mm or less (using a 1.6 crop factor), if I am reading the rules correctly.

35mm film format 36mm x 24mm used with a 50mm lens is the equivalent of looking down a rectangular tube with your naked eyeball. Olden-days sports photographers had a wire frame mounted on the camera, a bit like a low-tech WW2 anti-aircraft gunsight and used a lens equivalent to 1:1 natural vision. Where telephoto flattens perspective and wide-angle accentuates it, 50mm lies somewhere in the middle and truly reflects how you see with the naked eye. What Kimchi is asking is that we go out and get stuck-in among our subjects and not be a bunch of shrinking violets.

Bet your boots though that there are a few objections ... UK law on street photography is plain and simple, if it's a public place then it's OK so long as you don't harass or 'stalk' individuals. However as soon as you step into a train / bus station or shopping mall it's no longer 'public' and those pseudo-military security types will be on you like a shot. Seek permission from the site administrators first. Not even the Police are truly clued-in on what rules apply so don't expect them to be informed arbitrators who will come down on your side.

So basically what is being asked for is a simple Street pic taken with a 50mm Lens... Yep I can do that.

The legal aspect I understand. The bravery involved...lol now that is another issue..

People do not like cameras pointing at them at the best of times....having a stranger do it in a public place....!!!!AAAARGH....

We will see.

Just take a candid of life in a public place using normal/wide angle focal length.

Once you start zooming in you distance the viewer from the scene - hence the rule of 50mm or less

Except that on a D300s you'd need to be zoomed, in round numbers, to about 35mm (or less) to get a full-frame equivalent field of view as offered by a 50mm lens (or less) on an FX body.

I'll just add this is my favorite OA theme ever.

STEALTH PHOTOGRAPHY. Experimented yesterday in a crowded Sri Lankan street market setting the camera to wide angle and to shoot a series of 10 frames automatically after a 10 second delay. Hung it over my shoulder and strolled around while it did its thing. 40 frames taken, lots of rubbish but 2 potentially usable shots. I'll try again in a different situation and see how it goes. It certainly removes the 'in your face' confrontational aspect of street photography that might put off a few folks.

That's a shame. As I don't own a 35mm lens....and although the 18-200 will meet the requirements I don't relish the thought of walking the streets with that pointing at people in my town...??

So I guess I am excluded by the requirements...

But I tell you what... I will use my 50mm...and if that is not ok...then I don't know what else I can do...

SUNR15E, keep in mind that street photography does not by definition require the presence of people. Elliott Erwitt, my favorite photographer, has multiple books out on dogs that classify as street photography. Surely, pointing an 18-200mm at a four-legged friend wouldn't be too intimidating, would it?
Also - not trying to shamelessly plug my work - I have shot pictures that fall in the street category and don't have any people in them, not any dogs I might add. See some of my London shots for examples.

As an avid street photographer, I am not much of a fan of "stealth photography" I must admit, and I'd even go as far as saying I wouldn't classify it as street photography. Not every photograph taken on the street is a street photograph, and firing bursts randomly, to me, does not quite meet the requirements. Which makes me wonder: kimchi, would you allow street portraiture in this assignment as well? Many seem to be terrified of the idea of street photography, and street portraiture, IMO, is a little less intimidating for novices...
