Hi folks,

A photography related "Joke of the Day" thread.

Nokia releases a smartphone with a 41MP sensor.

Nope, it's not April the 1st. To be fair the press release does suggest that the lens can only resolve about 8MP, presumably before diffraction rears its ugly beak. I wonder how may pictures a minute the phone can take at the full 41MP image size? Have the memory card manufacturers had any input in the design of this phone?

Bob.

`At standard resolutions (2/3, 5 and 8 megapixels) this means the ability to zoom without loss of clarity and capture seven pixels of information, condensing into one pixel for the sharpest images imaginable.`

Who needs a full frame camera now? Wonder if it'll be good enough for pro's

Doh! I was beaten to it. I wanted to make a joke post involving phrases like "The Nikon D800 is obsolete"...

Anyway, super-sampling has been a technique I've been wondering if it would provide better output than traditional low sampling rate approaches. Now is possibly our chance to find out!

.
If he does he'll have to keep a sharp look out for moiré as I bet it doesn't have an anti-aliasing filter.

Whoops, strike that! It does have an anti-aliasing filter in the form of those "exclusive Carl Zeiss optics" which can't out-resolve the sensor. :P

Taking the link from photozone's forum, you can get high res samples at:
http://cdn.conversations.nokia.com.s3.a ... chive2.zip

Phone or not, they look VERY good to me.

Hi folks,

Maybe the joke is on me! From the white paper we have:
  • Focal length: 8.02mm
  • 35mm equivalent focal length: 26mm, 16:9 | 28mm, 4:3
  • F-number: f/2.4
  • Pixel Size: 1.4 microns
The crop factor is thus roughly 3.5, not hugely larger than the Nikon 1.

Hmm, 1.4 micron pixels. I wonder if one could remove the lens and use the camera for planetary imaging at the end of a telescope!

Mother of God!

Thanks for the link Popo.

This camera actually seems to be VERY good. The noise looks a bit jpeg compressed and the lens could have a bit more contrast, still this can turn out to be something amazing per phone cameras.

Note sure about the video though,
Quote:
For 720p HD video, you’re looking at 6x lossless zoom. And for nHD (640x360) video, an amazing 12x
zoom! In addition, we are encoding at up to 25mbps in high profile H.264 format.

25 milli bits per second
