Any speculations as to how postprocessors such as PSP or Photoshop Elements will perform with full size D800 images? I also have a number of not-inexpensive plugins (Color efex, Silver efex, etc.). I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on a D800, but have concerns about software choking on large images.

Provided the performance scales linearly, I'd say everything takes 3x as long. Really depends on if your plugins are multithreaded (can make full use of your multi-core system).

As to your question: It's actually pretty easy to test by yourself. Simply scale up an existing image to 7360x4912 and try this. Or you could stitch three images together an end up at that size.
I tried it for myself but only in Lightroom3 (and PSP7) with some fairly standard processing of sharpness, noise, exposure and curves. And it was a little slower but nothing to worry about on my over 1 year old laptop with 8GB RAM.
You should also consider that you don't process every image you shoot to the a full set of layers and what have you. The more time-consuming post-processing normally is reserved only for your better photos.

Wow - makes me smile when I look at a resized picture of that size and then imagine the detail if it wasn't resized.
I really hope Canon announces a FF camera with a similar pixel count.
