I'm going thru my Photoshop book and it assumes that you have some basic knowledge which I do have SOME So in Camera RAW I see how to use the different sliders for blacks and highlights and exposure and a basic understanding why and how to turn on the clipping mask. But ok, what is the definition of clipping? clipping the highlights and clipping the blacks?

Simply put, clipping is when you start losing data. If you get a clipping warning in a shadow, that means that shadow pixel is pure black, no detail in there. Same for highlights, but that's pure white.

Ok now i have it. The book I was reading, he was wanting to clip the blacks now i understand he wanted a pure black background behind the portrait he did.
