Maybe this is not the proper forum for this, but I'd like to know, given the fact that the software is not quite free , if it is worth buying it. I know that there is a 45 days free trial, but after I've looked into descriptions and watched some tutorials, I'm thinking that it implies a quite steep learning curve and 45 days may not be enough for me, PS manages to confuse me still after a year of casual use. To focus more the question, is in this software someting that I can't have using DSS and Photoshop ?

Simply put I can't imagine life without PixInsight now! Yes, I often refer to Harry Page's excellent video tutorials as well as the other tutorials available and yes, I make my own notes so I can replicate a workflow. I used to use IRIS which is very powerful in its own right and free to boot but that program was, to me, even more impenetrable. PixInsight just does stuff and does it really well. Collect some bias, dark and flat frames (the more the better as I recently discovered when comparing the improvement a set of 25 of each offered me over my previous 5) and, of course, some lights. Once you have a good data set you'll have plenty of time to get to see what PixInsight can offer you during the free trial. Even if you don't get on with it you'll still have a good set of data to play with in other software.
