Hi everyone! Welcome to January's Assignment!

The theme for this month is "Silhouettes", as suggested by sbl03 who won the November 2011 competition. Be sure to read the whole post for the rules.

In sbl03's own words:

"I'd like to choose the theme of "Silhouettes". The restriction is that you cannot create an artificial silhouette (that wouldn't be very photographic!), but you can enhance or intensify one."


The rules!

1: You can only submit one image and it MUST be taken during January 2012. Photos taken earlier will be disqualified!

2: All images submitted must be no more than 1024 pixels on their longest side, although you can include a link to a full resolution version if you like. Flickr users must link back to the original version to comply with its latest rules.

As always, please exercise good judgement on what is suitable for the forum. Keep it clean and family-friendly or it'll be removed. See the Forum Rules for guides.

Please include a sentence or two with your photo describing what you were trying to achieve and if there were any particular challenges in doing so like, for example, any special exposure or lighting setup.

We're all enthusiasts here, so it's also great to see what equipment you used and the settings too. So please also include the following:

This month has proved very very hard!! This was a shot I was chasing specifically for this "Assignment" while at the 24hrs Dubai race at the weekend. Even with 24hrs to get it finding a suitable location and then being there at the right time for the light was really difficult.

I was at the zoo in Zurich (Switzerland) with my son last week, when I saw these storks in front of the midday sun. I thought this would make a nice picture changed to the smallest aperture and took some pictures (without actually seeing, what I was taking, because the sun was so bright).

I only did very little post processing. I tried playing around with colors, but decided eventually to go with black and white to highlight the silhouette of the nest and storks (I hope this is acceptable). I mainly struggled with finding the right crop.

After I was done, I thought this would be a picture to compete with on the camera labs forum assignment. I had a look at this months topic and bingo - the picture actually fit.

Man I found this month tough as well being new to photography. With the winter here its tough to get a nice clear sky and some good sun for a good backlit subject!! Anyways, here is my entry for the month...

Post processing in NX2 (thats all i have now lol) with some adjust of sharpness, contrast and I liked the feel of it in BW so changed that too.

Cobblestones streets in San Juan, Puerto Rico

This was a rare opportunity having an empty street in San Juan. My objective in this image was taking the Silhouette of the people walking but not leaving the characteristic of the empty road and the cobblestones.

Taken on the Tresco, Scilly Isles Jan 2012. A balmy 13 degrees and a beautiful sunset.
Locked the focus on a subject about twenty feet from myself (hence the shallow DOF) and then swung the camera around to face the sun, recomposed the shot with the camera on self timer.
It took about 5 attempts to get anywhere near the shot above.

PP - added contrast, a little clarity and a vignette

ISO 400 was a mistake, I was shooting some portraits in a shaded area at f8 because it is where the lens is at its sharpest. At 135mm I still get a blurred background if it is sufficiently far away, then, moving along, saw this opportunity and snapped it!

Shot at dusk,outside my home. Pretty sure, is not the best, but just gave a try.

Graveyard in Middletown CT



This was actually a fluke, I didnt really set out to take a silhouette picture. I had an idea about taking a full 360 panorma in the middle of a graveyard, and then making a mirroball out of it. Mirrorball didnt work so good, but I did some cropping and it came out ok. The Image I posted was one of the hdr shots that just happened to contain a nice silhouette.
