Guy at work said a friend was skipping some stuff and if anyone would be interested. One item as a microscope, and I said what is it? He took that to mean I wanted it and now it's on the desk next to me!

It's a great lump of metal. Made by Gillet and Sibert (never heard of them) it looks seriously industrial.

There are two sets of numbers on each objective lens if that is the right term. Need to look that up some time what the mean.

1: Leitz 170/0.17 54/0.95
2: GS 10/0.28 160/-
3: GS 40/0.70 160/0.17
4: GS 100/1.30 160/OIL

I do remember reading that higher magnification optics can be oil immersed to improve their performance and work around the refraction of air.

(edit: the smaller pair of numbers are the magnification and numerical aperture)

The microscope was stored in a damp environment so it'll take some serious cleaning. Most stuff looks clear of fungus, although I suspect there is the start of some on the Leitz objective. Will post some photos of it when I get home, and if it works clean enough maybe some photos using it.

Hi Popo,

nice catch! I always wanted to have a proper microscope. Now it seems you got one. I would keep it in your place :).
I think the name Leitz has quite some tradition. If i remember correctly Leica was a spin off company from the former Leitz empire.

all the best

Matthias
