Hi I have a D700 Nikon with the 24-70 mm lens & a70-300 mm
My question ( not to stupid I hope ) seeing that you can adjust the
D700 to DX image would I be able to use a AF-S Nikon 18-200 mm
lens F/3.5-5.6 ED VR 11 on occasions when I go bush and don't want
to take a lot of gear ! I had a Konica-Minolta Dynax D7 before and
the 18-200 MM was a excellent all round lens !
If you can set me straight I will appreciate it, regards Drecked

I'd re-post in the Nikon section for more answers.

However if you shoot in DX mode on the D700 you're only getting around a 5.1Mp image.

It's not a lot of extra weight to take the 70-300 in your bag - you'll then have the same range, better image quality, and no crop factor. All for an extra 700g or so.

Yep, you can perfectly use the 18-200mm on a D700. I used it once on a D3 even in 4:5 crop-mode (which uses 80% of the pixels so you're at 10MP) and it showed various degrees of vignetting. But it was not too bad:

Btw. I allowed me to change the thread title to "DX lens on FX body". that should make your point clearer, Drecked.

That's just what I wanted to hear thank you Thomas , And that is a very
nice picture you posted with the reply !
I don't suppose the are considering making a 18-200 MM for the FX
body anytime soon It's a very good lens for when your traveling because
it covers the near and far .> Also what is your top pick for a micro lens
for the FX body something that makes the bugs look mean and scary?
thanks for your reply Gruß drecked

There is a "18-200 VR" for FX bodies: The Nikon AF-S VR 28-300mm 3.5-5.6G ED which I reviewed here.
You should definitely read this, as it might just be THE lens you're looking for. Lots of material in my review plus links to comparison of D300 + 18-200 vs D700 + 28-300, images etc.
Enjoy!

Didn't want to confuse you: all 18-200mm super-zooms on earth only cover the DX circle (plus a little more at longer focal lengths: see above).
But the 28-300 on a D700 gives you (almost) exact equivalent field of view and zoom range as a 18-200 on a DX body.
