I should point out that I use Picasa (the software) as an image browser. Picasaweb (image hosting) is a side effect of that, and you can link up to 800 pixel longest side images for embedding into forums.

Recently I have been dabbling with flickr as an image host, who's interface I still don't like. But they make it easier to link up to 1024 pixels longest edge.

I used to use photobucket too (also up to 1024 pixels) but they keep making their interface worse and worse to use. Now it's slow as hell, impossible to navigate and they play some video ads while you try to go through all that.

Hmmmm, sounds like your problem is much more hardware than software I'm afraid. The image files outputed by modern digital cameras are quite large. Computers do need to be of a certain standard to deal with them. Netbooks and tablets are very very lightweight computers in this respect and so will fall short.

Its worth noting there are 2 seperate bits to Picasa

1 - image editing software

2- online image storage (now being integrated into Google+ which is what the sunject of this topic was about)

Both are seperate and can be used without the other. They do however work quite neatly together

Yes, this is the worst thing google could made with picasaweb. Instead of making it faster, they made it slower (all that stoopid flash animations... simple html can show it 100x times faster!)

There is nothing more irritating than a flash, i first wait 5 seconds until it starts in pc, then until it loads its photo in memory, then again for stoopid transition - why they did that?

Picasa is not what it used to be, at least they fixed fullscreen view of images (i could not close it, only page reload worked.)

However i still use picasa for managing photos, although with never version they removed few choices of exporting images and left only two - which is not enough. I want to be able to export in resolution i want!

But this wont help, i will get my feedback to google, they listen sometimes, and i reccomend you guys do the same.
