EDIT 23/1/2012- I've edited this topics subject as it seems that its not the lens but the body that has the problem. I'll not edit the various posts so folks can see the whole story.

It was pointed out by Gregory.Rotter HERE that this camera/lens combination was front focusing. Now because I'm a newbie with an untrained eye I hadn't noticed this  > after a bit of google action I came across this test sheet, downloaded it and ran the test

Here's the result

Image

Model: Canon EOS 550D
ISO: 100
Exposure: 1/250 sec
Aperture: 1.4
Focal Length: 30mm

Clearly front focusing

And I'm loving this lens

So after another bit of google action I found there was a Sigma Service Centre in Dubai HERE. I gave them a bell and made the journey there to drop the lens off. It will be with them for 14 days :-(

I have taken another test with my Canon 50mm f1.8 to check its not the camera. I'll upload it and post it shortly

There is no such thing that this lens and that camera = front or back focus.
This is entirely based upon chance and it is an example of completely normal production variation, to get this adjusted properly as far as I understand you need to give the company both your lens and your camera and calibrate them together.

Because of this problem I refuse to buy a camera without the "Micro Adjust" feature.

Lorride, I understand what your saying. I'm learning fast. Problem I have is the 7D is to tall to fit in a reasonable size pelicase

Great =)

Yes, but the 7D is not thicker than the 550D, so just orient it another way? ^^

Have no fear Lorride, I put a lot of time and thought into my different options. There was no way a 7D would fit and taking the lens on and off on river banks isnt an option at all

Even this 1200 case is a bit big in a modern playboat

I see, you have indeed done you're best ;)

Smooth case, orderly and very clean!

Glad you posted that. I was about to go measure my 550D and lens to see what size Pelican I need and you just took care of it for me :D

Ok, so the 30mm lens has been to MK and come back and the problem seems to be the same.

First the original test shot

Then the one taken with the lens recalibrated

And now one with a 50mm f1.8

What are your thoughts?

I can take my 550D body to Canon, I spoke to them yesterday but it will be away for between 7 to 20 days

Do that, it's the only way to get it done properly, but make sure you tell them to ONLY adjust the lens to function with your 550D and not the other way around.

Not sure how it will work with Canon and a 3rd party lens? Your camera works great with the 50mm. Can Sigma take the camera and lens then adjust the lens to match the camera? If you go to Canon and have the camera adjusted then you 50mm will probably be off.
