Not sure about that part, as I think the 5D2 was a more significantly different sensor compared to the 1Ds3 even if they appear quite similar. I'm thinking more like the way the 7D sensor has also been recycled in the 550D, 600D and 60D.

I meant the technology used in the 1D-X's sensor filtering down to new sensors for APS-C cameras, not a full frame 5D. The sensitivity looks like a huge leap if you compare 1Ds III to 1DX, while 50D to 7D was a small step. (1 year versus 4 years probably has something to do with it.)

The difference between the 50D / 500D and the newer 18MP (7D, 60D, 550/600D) generation wasn't really noticable. Thay the main reason why I'm still using the 500D and spent some money for L lenses instead of a new body. Still I'd love a new body - but only if there is a difference in image quality. I'd love weather sealing, a bigger grip, a better video mode etc. - but I wouldn't get a new body just for that if the images won't get nticably better. I'm looking for a bit less noise especially between ISO 400 and 1600 (3200). The 1D4 would be nice, the 1DX would be great - but I can't afford any of them. I'd love to see the technology in a 7D2 or a 70D - or the same sensor in a payable 5D3, which would be a nice addition to my crop frame 500D.

If Canon ends up using the sensors (plural...3) found in the 1D-X in the 5D3 I'll be surprised. Perhaps 1 Digic 5+ and 1 Digic 4 for video duties.

And should we get similar performance (e.g. 51,200 usable ISO, 18 MP...similar AF...61 AF points with maybe 31 cross type instead of 41 found in the 1D-X...etc.) I'll be happy and be putting in my order.

And I'd assume the 5D3 will continue to be made in Japan. Since (as popo put it) Canon wasn't hit hard like Nikon was. Both in Japan in at their secondary plant in Thailand.

Will be an interesting year. Nikon is to announce the D4 on Friday. Probably putting it to market around the same time Canon gives us the 1D-X (or those that are willing to pony up 7k). Looking forwards to reading the test reports and comparisons. 1D-X vs D4. 5D3 vs D800. Which will I end up buying? Hmmmm...

Now looking at that noise it looks pretty amazing. If the 5D3 comes anywhere close to that I'm saving my money for that!

I think the samples look great, but the word is out in dpreview that it is junk, I wonder if I need to stay out of there.

Where I live, there is something like a 2 month wait. I asked my local camera store when they are going to get a 1DX display model, and the guy said that once the people who had pre-ordered get theirs, then they will worry about getting a display model, but not until then. So I'm going to have to wait awhile before I can try one.

Has anybody here gotten themselves a 1DX yet? If so, tell us your impressions of it!

I would love to be able to handle a 1D X, myself. I have been able to handle high-end professional Nikons much more readily, at a large local dealer in Houston, Texas. When the Nikon D4 first became available, this dealer had one, that was marked as not being for sale, that they were letting customers handle. There has usually been a D4 available for handling since that time, if I recall correctly. I am not sure I have seen a demonstrator Canon 1D-series; perhaps just pre-owned samples. I am not sure if this is due to differing policies, between the two makers, on providing demonstrators. (For that matter, I am not so sure I have seen a new 1D-series Canon available for sale at this dealer, at all; such items may be special-order, rather than kept in inventory.)
